First Things First: What Exactly is Google Analytics?

Before we jump into the setup, let's quickly clarify what we're dealing with. Google Analytics is a web analytics service offered by Google that tracks and reports website traffic. Think of it as a comprehensive dashboard for your website's performance. It's not a program you download and install on your computer, but rather a web-based service that you access through your browser.

Once it's collecting data from your site, you can answer critical business questions like:

  • How many people are visiting my website?
  • Where are my visitors coming from (e.g., Google search, social media, other websites)?
  • What pages are the most popular on my site?
  • Which marketing campaigns are driving the most traffic and conversions?
  • Are visitors using their desktops or mobile phones?

It's the foundation for making data-driven decisions instead of relying on guesswork to grow your online presence.

Where to Find and Access Google Analytics

Google Analytics is entirely web-based, so getting started is as simple as visiting the right website. You can find the official Google Analytics homepage right here:

https://analytics.google.com/

That's it. This is your starting point and the hub for all your future analysis.

To use Google Analytics, you'll need a Google Account. There's a good chance you already have one - if you use Gmail, Google Drive, or YouTube, you're all set. Your existing Google login credentials are what you'll use to access your Analytics account. If you don't have one for some reason, you can create one for free when you sign up.

Step-by-Step: Creating Your Google Analytics 4 Account

Ready to get started? Let’s walk through the entire setup process. When you visit the Google Analytics homepage, you’ll be prompted to "Start measuring." Clicking this begins an intuitive setup wizard.

Step 1: Create an Account

The first thing you'll do is create an "Account." In the Google Analytics hierarchy, the Account is the highest level, representing your business or organization. You might have multiple websites (or "properties") under one main account.

  • Account name: Enter your business name, like "My Awesome Company." This is just for your organization and isn't publicly visible.
  • Account Data Sharing Settings: Review these settings. They control how the data you collect is shared with Google for things like technical support and benchmarking. The default settings are typically fine for most users.

Click "Next" to move on.

Step 2: Create a Property

A "Property" is the website, app, or blog that you want to track. It legally belongs inside of your Account.

  • Property name: Name your website, like "My Awesome Website."
  • Reporting time zone: Select the time zone you operate in. This ensures that your daily reports align with your workday. For instance, if you operate daily from New York and it shows that your day ends at UTC (8:00 PM GMT) you'll be one day off in your reporting. This is crucial for accurate daily reporting.
  • Currency: Choose your primary currency. This is important if you have an e-commerce site and want to track sales revenue inside Google Analytics.

Google Analytics 4 is the current and only version you can create, as the older Universal Analytics has been discontinued. So anything that mentions selecting a "Property type," don't worry you'll never see the option!

Step 3: Enter Your Business Details

Next, Google will ask for a few details about your business. Be sure to fill this out accurately. Selecting options that closely align with your business information like "Industry category" and "Business size" allows GA4 to provide you contextual options based on your type of business.

You’ll also be asked how you intend to use Google Analytics along with your own business objectives. Check the boxes that best apply to your goals, such as "Examine user behavior..." and "Drive online sales". Then click "Apply."

Finally, you need to read and agree to the Google Analytics Terms of Service for your current country.

Setting Up Your Data Stream and Getting the Tracking Code

After you submit all information you'll see a pop-up with a screen that says, "Choose A Platform."

A Data Stream is simply where the data for your Property comes from and you will choose based on either 'Web', 'Android', or 'iOS' platforms available. For today's article, we'll choose the path everyone is most excited about and that is their website.

Step 4: Create a Web Data Stream

Simply click the "Web" menu option to begin.

  • Enter your website’s URL (e.g., www.example.com).
  • Give your stream a name (e.g., "Main Website Stream").

Be sure that "Enhanced Measurement" is enabled and selected. This is a key feature to GA4 as it tracks common actions on your site like page views, scrolls, outbound link clicks, video views, downloads, site-search tracking, and form events... all automatically.

Click "Create stream." Boom!

You will now see a 'Stream details' modal pop-up on your screen and in the upper right-hand corner under 'Measurement ID' there will be an ID that looks something like 'G-XXXXXXXXXX'. That is your 'MEASUREMENT ID'. Hold this value carefully.

How to Install the Google Analytics Tracking Tag

Okay, your account is set up, but Google Analytics isn’t tracking anything yet. You need to install its tracking tag on your website. This is still the easy part.

Option 1: Using A Plugin for WordPress, Shopify, Squarespace, etc...

The simplest path is using platforms that already have a dedicated tool to plug in your details. Many plugins handle 100% of the complexity so it's super easy for you.

  • WordPress: Use an official plugin like Site Kit by Google or Google Tag Manager for WordPress. After you install the plugin, it will prompt you for your Google Analytics GA-4 'Measurement ID'.
  • Shopify: Go to Online Store > Preferences. You'll find a 'Google Analytics' section that gives you a specific area to paste your Measurement ID code there, and you're done.
  • Squarespace/Wix: Look into 'External APIs', Settings > Advanced, and 'Website Analytics' section. You'll simply copy and insert the Measurement ID of your Google data. That's it!

Option 2: Using Google Tag Manager

Are you now asking the next big questions in your web development career...What is 'Google Tag Manager'? Good. Keep asking the important questions and now you're about to have a new superpower to put in your arsenal (GTM).

'GTM' removes any need to edit your website's source code and puts all of your marketing campaigns and scripts in a single workspace. This arsenal keeps track of website conversion tools and marketing channels you manage, allowing marketers to have power without needing the help of engineers or their development team.

With a couple of clicks, you could be done in less time and move on with what's important: Marketing and Growing your book of business.

Option 3: 'Hard Mode' - Installing your tracking code manually using JavaScript

This option requires technical knowledge of working with JavaScript and inserting <script> directly in the backend file structure. We will not go on to explain this, since many of the best options (1 and 2) require just one quick copy and paste of the 'Measurement ID', as we did above.

And you're done...

Verifying Your Google Analytics Setup: 'Is It Working?' Method

Before leaving everything up to chance, you MUST run a test and it is as simple as it sounds: Pull out your phone and search for your website. This is one search that will give instant rewards and this is that method right here!

Next, you will navigate through your 'Realtime Panel > View Users Panel > Look at Top Right'. It will say USERS 0 or 1 depending on how you find yourself in the real-time panel.
