Migrating to Google Analytics 4 can feel like a chore, but the GA4 Setup Assistant is built to handle the initial heavy lifting for you. What is the GA4 Setup Assistant?

The GA4 Setup Assistant is an automated tool within an existing Universal Analytics (UA) property that helps you create a new Google Analytics 4 property. Think of it as a starter kit. Instead of building a GA4 property from scratch, the assistant gives you a head start by migrating some of your foundational UA configurations.

It’s important to understand what the Setup Assistant doesn't do. It doesn't magically transform your UA property into a GA4 one. Your original UA property remains untouched and will continue collecting data until its sunset date. The assistant creates an entirely new and separate GA4 property alongside your UA property. Its main job is to get you on the board so you can start collecting the new event-based data that GA4 uses, which is fundamentally different from a UA's session-based model.

Before You Start: Key Considerations

Before launching the Setup Assistant, take a brief moment to confirm a few things. This tool is designed to create a brand new GA4 property. If you've already made one for your website, you don’t need to use the assistant. Running it will just create a duplicate.

Checklist Before Using the Assistant:

  • Admin Access: You need to have Editor or Administrator permissions for the Universal Analytics property you want to upgrade. Without it, you won’t see the option.
  • Check for an Existing GA4 Property: Look through your account to ensure a GA4 property doesn't already exist for this particular website. A GA4 property ID starts with "G-" while a UA property ID starts with "UA-".
  • Note Your Goals and Conversions: The assistant does not automatically migrate your UA Goals. You will have to recreate them as conversion events in GA4 manually. Take screenshots or make a list of your existing goals so you can rebuild them later.

Step-by-Step Guide to Using the GA4 Setup Assistant

Running the Setup Assistant itself only takes a few clicks. The real work comes after, but for now, let’s get the foundation built.

Step 1: Navigate to the Admin Panel in Google Analytics

Log into your Google Analytics account and navigate to the Universal Analytics property you want to start migrating. At the bottom left of your screen, click the gear icon for "Admin."

Step 2: Open the GA4 Setup Assistant

In the Admin panel, you'll see three columns: Account, Property, and View. In the Property column (the middle one), the very first option should be GA4 Setup Assistant. Click on it to begin.

Step 3: Start the Property Creation Process

You'll arrive at the Setup Assistant's welcome screen. You'll see two options. You’re looking for the first box, which says "I want to create a new Google Analytics 4 property." Click the blue Get started button.

Step 4: Create and Go to Your GA4 Property

A popup wizard will appear. It confirms the actions it will take: create a new GA4 property, copy some basic settings, and activate enhanced measurement. This also gives you the option to use your existing Universal Analytics tag to collect data. This is very useful if you have the analytics.js tag installed directly on your website, as it saves you from having to immediately add a new code snippet to your site. It’s generally a good idea to leave this checked. Click Create property.

Step 5: Verify Your New Property

That's it! After a moment, you'll get a confirmation message. You've successfully created a brand new GA4 property. The assistant has done its initial job. Now, you can click the blue button that says "Go to your GA4 property" to see what you've created. One of the first things you should do is find your new Measurement ID by going to Admin > Data Streams > [Click your new data stream]. You'll need this "G-" ID for integrations like Google Tag Manager or other platform connections.

What the Setup Assistant Does (and Doesn't Do)

Managing your expectations is a big part of this process. The assistant gets the ball rolling, but it's not a complete migration solution. Here’s a clear breakdown of what you get and what's left for you to do.

What It Does:

  • Creates a New GA4 Property: It generates a brand-new GA4 property connected to your existing UA property.
  • Copies Basic Settings: It ports over fundamental details like your property name, website URL, timezone, and currency settings.
  • Activates Enhanced Measurement: By default, it turns on GA4’s enhanced measurement. This powerful feature automatically tracks key user interactions like page views, scrolls, outbound clicks, site search, and file downloads without you having to set up manual tracking.
  • Connects to Your UA Tag: As mentioned, it can link your new GA4 property to your existing Universal Analytics tag, so if your website has the on-page UA tracking code, it will start sending data to GA4 as well.

What It Doesn't Do:

  • It does NOT import historical data. Your Universal Analytics data stays in Universal Analytics. GA4 starts collecting data from a blank slate the moment you create the property.
  • It does NOT migrate your goals. Universal Analytics used goals, while GA4 uses conversion events. You must manually configure which events you want to mark as conversions in your new property.
  • It does NOT set up user permissions. Just because you have access to the UA property doesn't mean your team members will automatically get it for the new GA4 one. You have to add them manually.
  • It does NOT carry over filters, a large portion of your reports, audience lists, or custom Dimensions/Metrics. These also need to be reconfigured manually.

What to Do After Using the Setup Assistant

Creating the property is an important first step, but it’s just the beginning. To get real value out of GA4, you'll need to configure it correctly.

1. Set Up Your Data Stream and Verify Tag Installation

The Assistant typically creates a Data Stream for you, which is the pipeline that funnels data from your website into GA4. Double-check that it’s working. The best way is to go to the Reports > Realtime report. If you see visitor data populating when you visit your site, it’s working.

2. Rebuild Your Conversions and Events

This is arguably the most important next step. Take that list of goals you made earlier and start creating them as events and conversions in GA4. Some may be covered by enhanced measurement (like a file download), but others (like a "Contact Us" form submission) will require custom event tracking, likely set up through Google Tag Manager.

3. Manage User Access

Go to Admin > Property Access Management and add your team members, giving them the appropriate permissions to view or edit the new property.

4. Link Other Google Products

Don't forget to link GA4 to your other accounts, like Google Ads, Google Search Console, and BigQuery. This ensures that valuable data flows seamlessly between platforms.

5. Increase Your Data Retention Period

By default, GA4 only stores granular user-level data for 2 months. You'll want to change this immediately. Go to Admin > Data Settings > Data Retention and change the "Event data retention" setting from 2 months to the maximum of 14 months to preserve your data for longer.

Final Thoughts

The GA4 Setup Assistant is a practical and straightforward tool that makes the initial jump from Universal Analytics much less intimidating. By following these steps, you can quickly generate your foundational GA4 property and get comfortable with the new platform while your UA property continues its final months of data collection.
