How to Turn On Analytics on Instagram

Cody Schneider7 min read

Posting on Instagram without checking your analytics is like driving with your eyes closed - you're moving, but you have no idea where you're going. To get that critical visibility, you first need to turn on Instagram’s built-in analytics tool, known as "Insights." This guide will walk you through the simple steps to switch to a professional account, unlock your data, and start making smarter decisions about your content.

Why You Need a Professional Instagram Account

Before getting into the "how," it's important to understand the "why." By default, a personal Instagram account doesn't come with any real performance data. To see who your audience is and how your content is performing, you have to switch to a professional account (either a "Business" or "Creator" account). Don’t worry, it’s completely free and only takes a minute to change.

Once you make the switch, you’ll unlock a ton of valuable features, including:

  • Access to Instagram Insights: This is the core analytics dashboard. You'll be able to see key metrics for your profile, individual posts, Stories, and Reels.
  • Detailed Audience Demographics: Understand exactly who follows you, including their age range, gender, and top locations (cities and countries).
  • Audience Activity Data: Discover the precise days and hours your followers are most active on Instagram, allowing you to post when you’ll get the most engagement.
  • Enhanced Profile Options: You can add a business category to your bio (e.g., "Digital Creator," "Clothing Brand," "Health/Beauty") and include contact buttons like "Email" or "Call."
  • Ability to Run Ads: A professional account is required to promote your posts or run paid advertising campaigns on Instagram to reach a wider audience.

In short, operating an Instagram account for any purpose other than personal use without activating these features leaves you completely in the dark. Switching is the first and most crucial step toward building an effective Instagram strategy.

How to Switch to a Professional Instagram Account (Step-by-Step)

Ready to unlock your data? The process of converting your personal profile into a professional one is simple and can be done right from the app in about 60 seconds.

Here’s how to do it:

  1. Go to Your Profile: Open the Instagram app and tap on your profile picture in the bottom-right corner to go to your profile page.
  2. Open Settings and Privacy: Tap the "hamburger" icon (the three horizontal lines) in the top-right corner, then select "Settings and privacy" from the menu.
  3. Find Account Tools: Scroll down a bit to the "For professionals" section and tap on "Account type and tools."
  4. Switch to Professional: Tap "Switch to professional account." Instagram will then show you a few screens highlighting the benefits. Keep tapping "Continue."
  5. Choose Your Category: Select a category that best describes what you do (e.g., Artist, Blogger, Clothing Brand, Entrepreneur). You can also choose whether to display this category label publicly on your profile. Tap "Done" when you've made your choice.
  6. Select Account Type: This is the last key step. You'll be asked to choose between a "Creator" and a "Business" account.

After this, Instagram may prompt you to complete a few optional setup steps, like connecting a Facebook Page or reviewing your contact info. You can do this now or skip it and finish it later in your settings.

Creator vs. Business Account: What’s the Difference?

The choice between Creator and Business can be a bit confusing, but the differences are pretty straightforward.

  • A Business account is best for brands, retailers, local businesses, and service providers. It gives you access to the Instagram API for third-party scheduling tools and lets you add a physical address to your profile. If you sell a product or service, choose this.
  • A Creator account is designed for public figures, content creators, artists, and influencers. It offers more flexible profile controls (like hiding your contact information or category) and provides access to slightly different growth insights tailored to personal brands. If you are the product, choose this.

For most users, the practical difference is minimal. If you’re unsure, starting with the "Business" account is generally a safe bet. You can always change it later by going back to "Account type and tools."

Finding and Understanding Your Instagram Insights

Congratulations, you now have access to Instagram Insights! But new data can feel overwhelming at first. Don't worry - you only need to focus on a few key areas to get started.

To find your dashboard, go to your profile and tap the "Insights" or "Professional dashboard" button located below your bio.

Inside, your analytics are broken down into a few main sections. Here are the most important ones to pay attention to:

1. Accounts Reached

This section tells you how many unique people saw your content. It’s the best measure of your overall brand awareness.

  • Reach vs. Impressions: It’s important to know the difference. Reach is the number of unique accounts that saw your content. Impressions is the total number of times your content was seen (one person could see your post three times, which counts as 1 reach and 3 impressions). Reach is often a more meaningful metric for growth.
  • Top Content: The dashboard will show you which posts, Reels, and Stories drove the most reach in a given period. This feedback is priceless - if a certain style of Reel is reaching new audiences, make more of that!

2. Accounts Engaged

Engagement tells you how many people are actively interacting with your content, not just seeing it. This is a powerful indicator of how much your content resonates with your audience.

  • Key Engagement Metrics: This section totals up your Likes, Comments, Saves, and Shares.
  • Why 'Saves' are the New Super-Like: A 'Like' is easy and passive. A 'Comment' is better. But a 'Save' is a strong signal to the Instagram algorithm that your content is highly valuable - so valuable that someone wants to come back to it later. Content with high saves (like tutorials, checklists, informative infographics, or inspiring quotes) tends to get shown to more people.

3. Total Followers

Instead of just watching your follower count go up or down, this section gives you valuable context about who those people are.

  • Follower Growth: Here, you can see how many people followed and unfollowed you each day. Don't sweat small daily fluctuations. Look for big-picture trends over weeks or months.
  • Demographics: See the breakdown of your audience by top cities, countries, age range, and gender. Are you reaching the audience you thought you were? This data helps you tailor your content language, references, and style to the people who are actually listening.
  • Most Active Times: This is arguably one of the most actionable pieces of data in all of Instagram Insights. It shows you the specific hours and days your followers are most active on the app. Use this to schedule your content to go live right when your audience is there to see and engage with it.

4. Individual Post Analytics

You can also see analytics for specific posts, Reels, and Stories. Simply navigate to the post you're curious about and tap the "View Insights" link below it.

Here, you can see how a specific piece of content was discovered, including how many impressions it got from the Home feed, from Hashtags, from the Explore page, and from your Profile.

Seeing that a post performed well with hashtags tells you your hashtag strategy is working. Seeing that a Reel got a lot of reach from non-followers on the Reels tab tells you that you created something entertaining and shareable.
