Why Share a Facebook Ad Preview in the First Place?

Creating an ad is only half the battle. Getting everyone on the same page is the other. Sharing a preview before you spend a single dollar is essential for a few key reasons:

  • Client Approvals: If you're running ads for clients, sharing a live preview link is far more professional than sending static screenshots. It lets them see exactly how the ad will appear in-feed and interact with elements like the call-to-action button.
  • Internal Collaboration: Get feedback from your marketing team, your boss, or the copywriter. A preview link allows them to see the ad with the correct formatting, character limits, and visual context, leading to better and more relevant feedback.
  • Testing User Experience: A shareable link lets you test the ad experience yourself outside of the Ads Manager interface. You can click the link and follow the user journey to your landing page, just as a potential customer would.
  • Troubleshooting on Different Devices: Send the link to colleagues to see how the ad renders on various phones, tablets, and browsers that you may not have access to.

Skipping this step can lead to misunderstandings, costly revisions after launch, and campaigns that don't look or function as intended. Fortunately, Meta makes the sharing process fairly straightforward once you know where to look.

Method 1: The Easiest Way - Using the Shareable Link in Ads Manager

This is the most common and versatile way to share an ad preview. It generates a unique URL that anyone can open to see the ad, whether or not they have a Facebook account or access to your Ads Manager. This is perfect for unpublished "dark posts" that you want to get approved before they have a public Post ID.

Follow these steps from your computer:

  1. Navigate to the Ad Level: Open your Facebook Ads Manager. Go to the campaign and ad set that contains the ad you want to share. Click on the Ad itself to select it.
  2. Open the Ad Preview: Once the ad is selected, you'll see a preview pane on the right-hand side. If it's not visible, look for the "Preview" button in the editing toolbar (it often looks like an eye icon or a square with an arrow) to open it.
  3. Find the "Share" Button: In the top right corner of the preview pane, you'll see a small button with a “Share” icon (it often looks like a paper airplane). Click this icon to open a dropdown menu.
  4. Generate the Shareable Link: From the dropdown menu, select "Share a link." A pop-up window will appear.
  5. Set the Link Expiration (Optional): You can set the link to expire after 30 or 60 days. For most approval cycles, the default 30-day link is more than enough time. Once you toggle this on, copy the link.
  6. Copy and Send: Click the "Copy" button to save the link to your clipboard. You can now paste this link into an email, Slack message, project management tool, or anywhere else you communicate with your team or client.

When someone clicks your link, they will see a simple web page showing a preview of your ad in the news feed placement. They can see the copy, headline, creative, and CTA button. For ads with multiple placements (like Stories or Messenger), the link often allows the viewer to toggle between different previews.

Method 2: Sharing a Preview of a Live Ad (Facebook Post ID)

Sometimes you need to share an ad that is already active - perhaps to show a manager how an ad is performing or to show a stakeholder the social proof (likes, comments, shares) it's accumulating. In this case, sharing a direct link to the live post is the best method.

Every post on Facebook, including ads, has a unique URL. This method allows you to grab that specific URL.

How to Find the Live Post URL:

  1. Select the Ad in Ads Manager: Just like before, navigate to the ad you want to share inside Ads Manager.
  2. Open Preview and Click Share: In the ad preview pane, click the "Share" icon (the paper airplane).
  3. Choose "Facebook Post with Comments": Instead of selecting "Share a link," choose "Facebook Post with Comments" or a similar option for Instagram. This will open the actual live ad post in a new browser tab.
  4. Copy the URL from the New Tab: The URL in your browser's address bar is the direct link to your ad post. Copy this entire URL and share it with your stakeholders.

Recipients must be logged into Facebook to see the post, and they will see it just like any other organic post in their feed, complete with all its likes, comments, and shares. This is invaluable for demonstrating performance and engagement.

When to Use a Shareable Link vs. a Post ID Link

  • Use a Shareable Link for: Pre-launch approvals, unpublished ads (dark posts), getting feedback without the distraction of social proof, sharing with people who don't have Facebook accounts.
  • Use a Post ID Link for: Sharing active ads, highlighting social engagement (comments/likes), allowing stakeholders to interact directly with the live ad.

Troubleshooting Common Problems

Sometimes things don't work as expected. Here are a few common issues and how to fix them.

1. The "Share a link" Option is Greyed Out

This is a common frustration. If you can't click the "Share a link" option, it's usually for one of these reasons:

  • The Ad is in Review or Has an Error: The ad creative or copy might be in "draft," have pending edits, or contain an error flagged by Facebook. Make sure the ad is saved completely and shows an "Active," "Scheduled," or "Inactive" status. It may not work for ads that are "In Review" or have been rejected.
• You Haven't Selected a Single Ad: Make sure you have clicked on a specific ad. If you're at the ad set or campaign level, the sharing options won't apply.
  • A Temporary Ads Manager Glitch: The platform can be buggy. Try refreshing the page, clearing your browser cache, or clicking "Review and Publish" to ensure all changes are saved before trying again.

2. The Link Has Expired

Remember that the links aren't permanent and eventually expire (typically after 30 days). If a client comes back to you a month later and says the link is broken, they're probably right. Simply go back into Ads Manager and generate a fresh link for them.

3. No Placements Show Up, or the Ad Looks Weird

The preview link does its best to show how the ad looks across placements, but it's not perfect. If a client trying to view an Instagram Stories ad preview on their desktop computer says it looks strange, that's expected. Mobile-first formats should ideally be viewed on a mobile device for the most accurate preview.

For the most realistic experience across all placements, make sure your ad creatives are optimized for each one (e.g., vertical videos for Stories, square images for feed). The preview will reflect the assets you've actually assigned to each placement.

4. The Recipient Can't See the Link at All

While the goal of the shareable link is to be universally accessible, aggressive ad blockers or corporate firewalls can sometimes interfere with how the preview page loads. If someone reports a problem, ask them to try opening the link in an incognito window or on a different network (e.g., using their mobile data instead of office Wi-Fi).

Final Thoughts

Knowing how to share a Facebook Ad preview isn't just a technical skill, it's a vital part of running smooth, collaborative campaigns. By using shareable links and post IDs, you eliminate guesswork, ensure everyone is aligned, and get the approvals you need to launch with confidence, saving you time and preventing costly mistakes.

Once those ads are approved and running, managing and reporting on their performance becomes the next challenge. Instead of wasting hours manually pulling data into spreadsheets, we built Graphed to handle the heavy lifting. You can connect Facebook Ads and your other marketing platforms, then just ask in plain English for reports like "Show me a comparison of spend, amount spent, and CPC by campaign for the last 30 days," and get a live, automated dashboard in seconds. This helps our clients spend less time building reports and more time acting on the insights from their campaigns.
