Before You Get Started: What You’ll Need

Setting up your Google Ads account is straightforward, but you can make the process even faster by gathering a few key items beforehand. Having this information ready will let you move through the steps without having to pause and dig for details.

Here’s a quick checklist of what to have on hand:

  • An active Google account: You'll need credentials for a Google account to create and manage your ads. If you use Gmail or Google Workspace, you already have one. If not, you can create one for free in a couple of minutes.
  • Your business website: Google will ask for the URL of the website or landing page you plan to send ad traffic to. Make sure it's the final destination page for users who click your ads.
  • Payment information: Have a credit or debit card ready. You’ll need to add a payment method to activate your account and run campaigns. Google won't start charging you until you actively launch a campaign and it starts getting clicks.
  • Basic business details: This includes your legal business address and phone number for the billing setup.

That's it. Once you have these basics, you're ready to create an account the right way.

Smart Mode vs. Expert Mode: A Crucial First Choice

As you begin the signup process, Google will try to direct you into one of two modes: Smart Mode or Expert Mode. This is arguably the most important decision you'll make during setup, as it completely changes your ability to manage, optimize, and see data from your campaigns.

What is Smart Mode?

Smart Mode is a simplified, automated version of Google Ads. It’s designed for absolute beginners and business owners who want to set up an ad campaign in just a few minutes with minimal effort. It automates much of the process, including ad creation, targeting, and bidding.

  • Who it’s for: Small business owners with limited time and no marketing experience who just want to get an ad running quickly.
  • Pros: Very easy setup process and minimal ongoing management required.
  • Cons: Drastically limited control. You can't choose specific keywords, use negative keywords to block irrelevant searches, or fine-tune your ad copy. Reporting is basic, and it's easy to waste money on clicks that aren't relevant to your business because you lack control.

What is Expert Mode?

Expert Mode is the full Google Ads platform. It gives you complete access to all features, settings, campaign types, and detailed reporting. Don't let the name scare you off - you don't need to be an "expert" to use it. It's simply the standard version for anyone serious about getting results from their advertising.

  • Who it's for: Any marketer, agency, or business owner who wants full control over their advertising budget and performance.
  • Pros: Total control over keywords, bids, budgets, targeting, ad copy, and campaign types. You get access to granular performance data to see what's working and what isn’t, allowing you to optimize for better results.
  • Cons: There is a learning curve, but the investment in learning is well worth the return.

Our Recommendation: Always Choose Expert Mode

Even if you are a complete beginner, we strongly recommend starting with Expert Mode. You have significantly more control over where your money goes. The good news is that you can activate it during setup with a single click, and there's a trick to bypass the forced campaign creation so you can explore the account before spending any money. We will show you exactly how in the next section.

Step-by-Step: Creating Your Google Ads Account

Follow these steps to create your account properly using Expert Mode and avoid being forced into launching a campaign before you're ready.

Step 1: Go to the Google Ads Homepage

Navigate your browser to the official Google Ads website at https://ads.google.com. Click on the "Start Now" button. You’ll be prompted to sign in with an existing Google Account or create a new one.

Step 2: Find the “Switch to Expert Mode” Link

After signing in, Google will immediately push you toward its simplified campaign setup flow. This is the Smart Mode interface. You need to opt out of this to get access to the full platform. Look closely toward the bottom of the page. You will see a small, but very important, link that says “Switch to Expert Mode.”

Click this link. This is the most crucial step in the entire process. If you miss this, you’ll be locked into the simplified Smart Mode, which significantly limits your control.

Step 3: Create an Account Without Creating a Campaign

Once you’re in Expert Mode, Google will still try to get you to build a campaign right away by asking "What’s your main advertising goal?". Don’t fall for it! Building a campaign now is premature. You haven't set up billing or, more importantly, conversion tracking. Instead, look below the goal choices for another small link that reads: “Create an account without a campaign.”

Clicking this lets you finish the account setup first. You can then get your payment information in place, explore the dashboard, and set up crucial tracking before ever spending a dollar.

Step 4: Confirm Your Business Information

The next screen asks for your business information. This part looks simple, but it's important to get it right. You'll be asked to confirm:

  • Billing Country: Where your business is legally registered.
  • Time Zone: This will be the time zone for all your reports and scheduling.
  • Currency: The currency you will use for billing and reporting.

Heads up: These three settings are permanent. Once you set them, you cannot change them for this account. Double-check that they are correct before you click "Submit."

Step 5: Set Up Your Billing and Payment Information

Now you're on the final step: billing. This page is where you link your payment method to your account.

Billing Profile

  • Account Type: Choose between "Organization" (if you're a registered business) or "Individual." This affects tax information, so choose correctly.
  • Tax information: Enter your business name and address as they appear on legal documents.
  • Primary contact: Put your name and contact details here.

Payment Method

  • How you pay: You’ll likely see two main options: Automatic payments and Manual payments.
  • With Automatic payments (most common), Google charges your card automatically after your ads accrue costs - either 30 days after your last payment or when you hit a certain billing threshold (e.g., $50, $250), whichever comes first.
  • With Manual payments, you add funds to your account upfront, and Google deducts the ad spend from that balance. This isn't available in all countries and is generally less convenient. We recommend Automatic payments for most users.
  • Enter your credit or debit card details, agree to the terms of service, and click "Submit."

Congratulations! Your Google Ads account is now created. You'll be taken to the main account dashboard.

What to Do After Your Account Is Created

Your account exists, but don't rush to launch a campaign just yet. There are a few foundational tasks to complete that will set you up for success.

1. Explore the Dashboard

Take a few minutes to familiarize yourself with the layout. The main navigation menu is on the left. The most important areas you'll use are:

  • Overview: A high-level dashboard of account performance.
  • Campaigns: The hub where you will build, manage, and review all your campaigns.
  • Keywords: Found under the "Audiences, keywords, and content" tab, this is where you’ll manage the search terms that trigger your ads.
  • Tools and settings (wrench icon): This in the top menu is your command center for billing, account access, conversion tracking, reporting, and keyword planning.

2. Set Up Conversion Tracking

This is, without a doubt, the most critical step to take before you run any ads. Conversion tracking allows Google to measure the valuable actions users take on your website after clicking your ad - like making a purchase, filling out a form, or signing up for a newsletter. Without it, you have no real way of knowing which ads or keywords are actually driving business results. You’ll be spending money based on clicks, not conversions.

To set it up, go to Tools and settings > Conversions and follow the prompts to create your first conversion action.

3. Do Your Keyword Research

Now that you have account access, you can use the Keyword Planner for free (Tools and settings > Keyword Planner). Use this tool to discover the search terms people are using to find products or services like yours. Look for keywords that have decent search volume and show strong commercial intent.

Final Thoughts

Getting your Google Ads account set up correctly from the start is a game-changer. By choosing Expert Mode, creating the account without a campaign, and carefully confirming your business details, you’ve built a solid foundation. Now you can focus on the activities that actually drive results, like implementing conversion tracking and planning your first profitable campaign.

Once your campaigns are running, the next challenge becomes making sense of the performance data. We built Graphed to help with exactly that. Instead of getting lost in spreadsheets, you can hook up your Google Ads account and ask questions like, “Show me the cost per conversion for my top campaigns last month,” and get a real-time dashboard instantly. This makes it simple to understand your ROI and make better marketing decisions.
