You can download it, install it, and use it to its full potential on your local machine without needing a work, school, or any other kind of account. Power BI Desktop is where you'll spend most of your time as a learner. It's the authoring tool where you connect to data sources, clean and transform data with Power Query, build a data model, and design interactive reports with visuals and DAX calculations.

You can learn about 95% of everything you need to know about Power BI using the Desktop version alone. The main thing you can't do is publish your reports to the cloud-based Power BI Service to share them or collaborate with others. But for self-study, that's perfectly fine.

This is by far the best method for any serious learner. Microsoft offers a fantastic free program for developers, and it's the perfect sandbox for learning Power BI. The program gives you a free, renewable Microsoft 365 E5 subscription.

Why is this so great? The E5 subscription is a high-level enterprise plan and comes with 25 user licenses, all of which include a Power BI Pro license. You are essentially creating a fictional company for yourself to practice in.

Step-by-Step guide:

1. Visit the Developer Program Site: go to the Microsoft 365 Developer Program homepage.
2. Join With a Personal Account: click "Join now" and sign in with a standard Microsoft personal account (e.g., yourname@hotmail.com or yourname@outlook.com). If you don't have one, you can create one for free.
3. Set Up Your Subscription: After filling out a short survey about your interests (you can just select "For personal projects"), you'll be prompted to set up your E5 sandbox subscription.
4. Sign Up for Power BI: Now head back to the Power BI website. When it asks for an email to sign-up or sign in, use your brand new yourname@yourdomain.onmicrosoft.com address. It will recognize this as an organizational account, and you'll get access to the Power BI Service with Pro features.

This developer tenant is free for 90 days but will automatically renew as long as you show activity, which includes logging into Power BI. It's the most robust, long-term way to get the full Power BI experience without needing a real work email.

Method 2: Start a Microsoft 365 Business Trial

If you need access quickly and for a shorter period, you can sign up for a free trial of a Microsoft 365 Business plan, like Business Basic or Business Standard. These trials typically last for 30 days and provide access to the necessary services to create an organizational account.

How this works:

1. Navigate to the Microsoft 365 for Business page and choose a plan that includes a free trial.
2. During the sign-up process, you'll be guided to create a business account (yourcompany.onmicrosoft.com), just like with the developer program.
3. Once your trial is active, use that new email address to sign up for Power BI.

Important Warning: Unlike the renewable developer program, this is a commercial trial. It will ask for credit card information and will automatically charge you once the trial period ends.
