First Things First: Do You Still Need a UA Tracking ID?

With Google Analytics 4 as the new standard, you might wonder why you'd even need an old Universal Analytics (UA) ID. After all, UA properties stopped processing new data on July 1, 2023. While UA is a thing of the past for new data collection, there are several practical reasons you might still need to pull that ID for third-party tool integration, historical data purposes, and more.

Here are a few common scenarios:

  • Third-Party Integrations: Many plugins, reporting tools, and marketing platforms were built to connect directly with Universal Analytics. While most are updating, some older or less-maintained tools might still require a "UA-" property ID to connect your data.
  • Historical Data Access: You may need to identify which old UA property corresponds to which website or client to properly analyze historical performance data that resides there.
  • Account Audits: If you're taking over an existing marketing account, you'll need to know which tracking codes are installed to understand what's already being measured and prevent tracking conflicts.

Essentially, even though GA4 is the future, the UA ID is still a necessary piece of information for managing integrations and understanding data from the past decade.

The Step-by-Step Guide to Finding Your UA ID in Google Analytics

If you have an existing Universal Analytics property, finding the Tracking ID only takes a minute. The key is making sure you’ve selected the right property from the start. Here's exactly how to do it.

Step 1: Go to the Admin Panel

Log in to your Google Analytics account. On the bottom-left of the screen, you’ll see a gear icon labeled Admin. Click it to open the administrative settings for your account.

Step 2: Select Your Universal Analytics Account

Make sure that you're viewing the correct property. This ensures that you're working with the data you intend to modify.

Step 3: Locate the "Tracking Info"

After selecting the correct property, look for the "Tracking Info" tab in the Property column. This is where you'll find your UA ID.

Step 4: Find Your UA ID

Inside "Tracking Info," select "Tracking Code." Your UA tracking ID will be prominently displayed at the top of this page, formatted as "UA-XXXXXXXX-X."

Ran Into a Problem? Here’s What’s Happening

Finding your UA ID is straightforward if you have an existing UA property, but a few things can go wrong. Here are the most common issues users face and how to fix them.

Issue 1: You're in a GA4 Property and Can't Find "Tracking Info"

This is the number one source of confusion. If you select a GA4 property in the Admin panel, the "Tracking Info" option will not exist in the Property column. This is intentional. GA4 uses a completely different tracking system and data model.

Instead of a UA ID, every GA4 "Data Stream" has a "Measurement ID," formatted as G-XXXXXXXXXX.

Solution: In the Admin settings, go back to the "Property" dropdown menu and look for a property that starts with "UA-". If you have one, you can find the classic "Tracking Code" section there. If you don't see one, you may only have a GA4 property for that site.

Issue 2: You Never Created a Universal Analytics Property

For websites and apps set up after mid-2022, there’s a good chance you only have a GA4 property. Google encouraged users to create GA4 properties by default long before Universal Analytics stopped processing data.

Solution: Unfortunately, you cannot go back and create a new UA property. Your website uses a GA4 "Measurement ID" (G-XXXXXXXXXX) for its tracking. You will need to check if the third-party tool you're trying to configure now accepts a GA4 Measurement ID. Most modern, actively supported tools have already made this update.

Issue 3: You Don’t Have the Right Permissions

Sometimes you might be in the right account and the right "UA-" property, but the "Tracking Info" menu is still missing. This often comes down to user permissions.

To view the "Tracking Info" and "Tracking Code" options in a Universal Analytics property, you typically need Edit level permission. Users with only "Viewer" or "Analyst" roles may not have access to these settings to prevent them from accidentally changing how data is collected.

Solution: Check your permission level by going to Admin > Property > Property Access Management. If you do not have Editor permissions, you will need to ask an account administrator to either grant you Edit access or have them retrieve the UA ID for you.

Final Thoughts

Finding your old Universal Analytics tracking ID comes down to navigating to the Admin panel and making sure you’ve selected your legacy "UA-" property. Once you're in the right place, grabbing your tracking code for those final few integrations is a quick process.
