What is a Looker Instance URL (and Why Do You Need It)?

First, let's quickly clarify what we're talking about. A Looker "instance" is simply your company's own private, dedicated Looker environment. It's the secure space where all your organization's data, dashboards, "Looks" (saved reports), and user accounts live. The Instance URL is the unique web address you use to access this environment.

You’ll commonly need this URL for a few key tasks:

  • Connecting other tools: If you want to pull Looker data into a spreadsheet, an automation tool like Zapier, or another analytics platform, the first thing it will ask for is your instance URL to establish the connection.
  • Accessing the API: To automate reporting or build custom applications, developers will need the base instance URL to interact with the Looker API.
  • Sharing and bookmarking: Sometimes you need to share the main login page or bookmark it for easy access, rather than linking to a specific, deep-level dashboard.
  • Onboarding new team members: When a new colleague joins, you'll need to give them the correct link to log in and get started.

Essentially, it’s the front door to your company's data hub in Looker. The URL for a specific dashboard you're viewing is just one room inside the house, the instance URL is the home address.

The Easiest Method: Just Look at Your Browser's Address Bar

In most cases, finding your instance URL is as simple as opening Looker and looking at the address bar in your web browser. Don't overthink it! This is almost always the answer.

Let’s say you’re currently viewing a dashboard. Your full URL might look something like this:

https://bigboxcorp.looker.com/dashboards/1234?Sales+Region=West

That big, long string is a link to a specific resource inside your instance. The part you need is just the beginning.

Your Instance URL is the base domain part of the URL. To find it, just take the first part, from https:// up to the first single /.

So, from the example above, your instance URL is:

https://bigboxcorp.looker.com

That’s it. Ignore everything after the .com (or .io, .net, etc.), including the forward slash, the word "dashboards," and any numbers or question marks. That part is directing your browser to a specific page, but the application you want to connect only needs the main address.

Understanding Common URL Formats

What if your URL doesn't look as simple as the example above? Many companies customize their Looker URLs, so it helps to recognize the common patterns.

1. Standard Looker-Hosted URL

This is the most common format for companies whose Looker instance is hosted by Google Cloud. It typically follows this pattern:

https://yourcompany.looker.com

Or, it might include a cloud region:

https://yourcompany.us-east-1.looker.com

Again, to get the base instance URL, you just need the full domain name, including looker.com.

2. Custom or "Vanity" URL

Some organizations set up a custom domain to make the URL more branded and professional. In this case, you won't see "looker.com" in the address at all. It will look like a subdomain of your company's primary website:

https://looker.yourcompany.com

https://analytics.yourcompany.org

https://data.yourbrand.io

The principle is exactly the same. The instance URL is the entire subdomain and domain part - from https:// to the end of the .com, .org, or .io.

3. Hostname for API Connections

If you're looking for the URL to configure an API connection, you might see it referred to as the "hostname" or "endpoint." In virtually all modern cases, this is the same as the instance URL you find in your browser bar.

For API purposes, you may need to provide the "Host URL" and exclude https://. So, if your instance URL is https://bigboxcorp.looker.com, the hostname would just be:

bigboxcorp.looker.com

Some integrations or applications may also require a specific API port number, especially for older or self-hosted instances. If all else fails, you may need to check the API settings within Looker's admin panel.

Alternative Ways to Find Your Looker URL

If you don’t have Looker open or can't seem to access it directly, here are a few other reliable methods to find your instance URL.

Method 1: Check Your Email Inbox

Think back to when you first got access to Looker. You almost certainly received a welcome email. Search your inbox for phrases like:

  • "Welcome to Looker"
  • "Looker account activation"
  • "You've been invited to Looker"

These emails will contain a link that points directly to your company's Looker login page. The domain in that link is your instance URL.

Method 2: Ask a Colleague or Your Team Lead

This is often the fastest and simplest path. Someone else on your team is likely using Looker regularly. Just send a quick message asking if they can copy and paste the URL from their browser's address bar. Your team's data analyst, marketing operations manager, or sales manager are all great people to ask.

Method 3: Check Your Single Sign-On (SSO) Portal

Does your company use a service like Okta, Azure, Google Workspace, or OneLogin to manage app access? If so, you're in luck.

Log into your company’s application dashboard or SSO portal and look for the Looker tile. Simply right-clicking on the Looker app icon and selecting "Copy Link Address" will give you the exact URL you need without even having to open it.

Method 4: Contact Your Looker Admin or IT Department

When all else fails, it’s time to call in for backup. Your organization has one or more designated Looker administrators, and your IT department can almost certainly look up the information for you.

Just ask them, "I need the main instance URL for our company's Looker account to connect another application." They will know exactly what you need and can provide it in a matter of minutes.

Finding Your API Host Information from the Admin Panel

If you need the URL for API-specific connections, the most definitive source is the Looker Admin panel itself. Note that you may need admin-level permissions to see this page.

  1. Log into your Looker instance.
  2. In the bottom-left navigation menu, click on Admin.
  3. Under the "Platform" section in the Admin menu, click on API.

The API page will explicitly state your API Host URL. For most modern, cloud-hosted Looker instances, this will be your instance URL followed by a specific port number for the API, typically 19999.

It will look something like:

https://bigboxcorp.looker.com:19999

This full address, including the port number, is what you would enter into another tool or script that requires your "API Host" information, ensuring it communicates with Looker through the correct channel.

Final Thoughts

Finding your Looker Instance URL is usually as simple as glancing at your browser's address bar and copying the domain name. If it's not immediately obvious, checking your email history, SSO portal, or just asking a teammate will give you the answer in no time.
