Understanding Your Options: Pause vs. Remove

Before you click any buttons, it's important to understand the difference between pausing and removing a campaign, ad group, or ad. They might sound similar, but they have very different outcomes.

  • Pausing: This is the most common and flexible option. When you pause something in Google Ads, you temporarily stop it from running. Your ads won't show, and you won't accumulate new costs. The best part? All of your campaign data, settings, and performance history are preserved. You can re-enable the campaign, ad group, or ad at any time with a single click and pick up right where you left off. Think of it as a light switch you can turn on and off.
  • Removing (or Deleting): This is a permanent action. When you remove a campaign, ad group, or ad, you are deleting it forever. Your ads will stop showing permanently, and you will not accumulate any more costs. However, you cannot re-enable it. While the historical performance data will still be visible in your account reports, the structure, settings, keywords, and ads themselves will be gone. Think of this as throwing the light switch in the trash.

So, which one should you choose? For most situations, pausing is the way to go. It gives you complete control without any permanent consequences. Pause your ads if:

  • The campaign is for a seasonal promotion that has ended but may return next year.
  • You're temporarily out of stock of a product.
  • Your budget is tight and you need to stop spending for a short period.
  • You want to test changes and need to turn off the original version temporarily.

You should only remove an ad or campaign if:

  • You created it by mistake.
  • It was a one-time test that you know with 100% certainty you will never use again.
  • You are restructuring your entire account and need to clean up old, irrelevant campaigns permanently.

When in doubt, always choose Pause. There is rarely a good reason to permanently remove a campaign that has historical data you might want to reference later.

How to Pause Your Google Ads (Step-by-Step)

You can pause at three different levels in your Google Ads account: the campaign level, the ad group level, or the individual ad level. Here’s what each one means and how to do it.

Pausing an Entire Campaign

Pausing a campaign is the broadest action. It will stop all ad groups and ads within that campaign from running and accumulating costs. This is the best option if you want to stop a whole initiative at once, like a "Summer Sale" campaign.

  1. Log in to your Google Ads account.
  2. In the left-hand navigation menu, click on Campaigns.
  3. You’ll see a list of all your campaigns. Find the one you want to pause.
  4. Look for the small colored dot next to the campaign name. A green dot means it's "Enabled" and currently running.
  5. Click on the green dot. A drop-down menu will appear with the option to Pause.
  6. Click Pause. The dot will turn gray, and the campaign is now paused.

To resume it later, simply click the gray dot and select Enable from the menu.

Pausing an Ad Group

If you have a campaign with multiple ad groups targeting different themes or products, you might only want to stop one of them. For example, in your "Footwear" campaign, you might want to pause the "Winter Boots" ad group as summer approaches.

  1. From your Google Ads dashboard, click on the campaign that contains the ad group you want to pause.
  2. In the left-hand menu, which now shows options for that specific campaign, click on Ad Groups.
  3. Find the ad group you want to pause in the list.
  4. Just like with campaigns, click the green dot next to the ad group name.
  5. Select Pause from the drop-down menu. The dot will turn gray, and only that specific ad group will stop running.

Pausing an Individual Ad

Sometimes you don't need to stop an entire campaign or ad group, just one specific ad that isn't performing well or is outdated.

  1. Navigate to the campaign and then the ad group that contains the ad you wish to pause.
  2. In the left-hand menu for that ad group, click on Ads & assets.
  3. You'll see a list of all your ads in that ad group. Find the one you want to pause.
  4. Click the green dot next to its status and select Pause.

Pausing at this level allows you to fine-tune your account, keeping the high-performing ads running while you stop the ones that aren't delivering results.

How to Remove Your Google Ads (Step-by-Step)

Again, a quick reminder: removing ads, ad groups, or campaigns is a permanent action. If there's any chance you'll want to use it again, stick to pausing. If you are absolutely sure, here's how to do it.

The process is nearly identical to pausing, but you select items with a checkbox and choose "Remove" from an "Edit" menu.

  1. Navigate to the level you want to edit (Campaigns, Ad Groups, or Ads & assets).
  2. Click the checkbox next to the specific item (or items) you want to permanently remove.
  3. Once you’ve selected an item, a blue bar will appear at the top of the table. Click on the Edit button in this bar.
  4. From the drop-down menu, select Remove.
  5. Google Ads will ask you to confirm your decision. If you're certain, click Confirm to permanently delete the selected item.

Setting an End Date: The Proactive Approach

Instead of remembering to manually stop a campaign on a specific day, you can pre-set an end date. This is the perfect solution for promotions with a clear timeline, like a Black Friday sale or a limited-time offer.

Setting an end date automates the process, so your campaign stops spending exactly when it's supposed to, even if you forget.

How to Set or Change an End Date:

  1. In the left-hand navigation menu, click Campaigns.
  2. Click on the name of the campaign you want to edit.
  3. In the secondary navigation menu on the left, click on Settings.
  4. Look for the "Start and end dates" section and click to expand it.
  5. You can now set a Start date and an End date. Select your desired end date from the calendar.
  6. Click the blue Save button at the bottom of the page.

Your campaign will now run as normal and then automatically pause itself on the end date you specified. You don't have to do anything else!

Common Questions & Final Tips

Here are a few quick answers to common questions about stopping Google Ads.

Will I still be charged after I pause my ad? No. Once a campaign, ad group, or ad is paused or removed, it is no longer eligible to enter the ad auction. You will not accrue any new costs. You will, however, be billed for any costs that were accrued before you paused it.

How long does it take for my ads to actually stop running? The change is nearly instantaneous. Once you hit "Pause," your ads should stop showing within minutes.

Can I restart a removed campaign? No. "Remove" means it's gone for good. You can’t restart it, but you can always create a new campaign from scratch.

What should I check before pausing a high-spend campaign? Before making any major changes, it's always a good idea to look at your performance data. How has the campaign performed in the last day? The last week? Stopping a campaign could have a big impact on your website traffic or lead flow, so make sure the decision is informed by recent data.
