First Things First: Why You Need a Facebook Business Manager

You might have seen the "Boost Post" button on your Facebook business Page and thought, "Isn't that how I advertise?" While boosting posts is a simple form of advertising, it barely scratches the surface of what's possible. To unlock the full power of Facebook Ads, you need a dedicated Ads Manager account, and the best way to create and manage that is through a Facebook Business Manager (now often called Meta Business Suite or Business Portfolio).

Think of Business Manager as the central command center for all your business assets on Facebook and Instagram. It's a dedicated space, separate from your personal profile, where you can manage:

  • Your Facebook Pages: Keep your business pages safely organized.
  • Your Ad Accounts: Create and control multiple ad accounts for different businesses or clients.
  • Your Instagram Profiles: Link and manage business Instagram accounts.
  • Pixels and Data Sources: Manage the tracking codes that measure website actions.
  • Team Members and Partners: Securely grant specific levels of access to employees or agencies without sharing your personal login credentials.

Starting with Business Manager is non-negotiable for serious advertising. It gives you enhanced security, clear organization, and better collaboration tools. Bypassing it is a common mistake that often leads to logistical headaches down the road, especially as your business grows.

Learn how to deploy AI marketing agents across your go-to-market — the best tools, prompts, and workflows to turn your data into autonomous execution without writing code.

Step 1: Create Your Facebook Business Manager Account

Let's get your command center set up. This process only takes a couple of minutes. Make sure you are logged into your personal Facebook profile, as it will be used to verify your identity, but don't worry - your personal information and your business assets will remain completely separate. No one you work with will see your personal profile.

  1. Navigate to https://business.facebook.com/overview.
  2. Click the blue "Create an Account" button in the top right corner.
  3. A pop-up window will appear. Here, you'll need to enter three key pieces of information:
  4. Click "Submit."

After you submit, you'll need to check your inbox for a verification email. Open it and click the confirmation link to complete the setup. Once confirmed, you’ll be inside your brand-new Business Manager dashboard.

Step 2: Add Your Facebook Page to Business Manager

With your Business Manager active, the next step is to connect your business's Facebook Page to it. This officially claims the Page as one of your business assets.

  1. From your Business Manager dashboard, look for the gear icon labeled "Settings" on the left-hand menu.
  2. Inside Business Settings, navigate to the "Accounts" section and click on "Pages."
  3. Click the blue "Add" button. You’ll be presented with three options:

For most users reading this, you’ll be choosing "Add a Page." Once connected, the Page will appear in your assets list, ready for your campaigns.

Step 3: Create Your First Facebook Ad Account

Now for the main event: creating the ad account itself. This is where your campaigns will live, where you'll set your budgets, and where your billing information will be stored.

  1. In the same Business Settings menu, look right below "Pages" and click on "Ad Accounts" under the "Accounts" section.
  2. Since this is a new Business Manager, it will likely be empty. Click the blue "Add" button.
  3. Similar to adding a page, you’ll see three options. Select "Create a new ad account."
  4. You’ll be asked to provide some crucial details. Pay close attention here, as these settings cannot be changed later:
  5. In the next step, you’ll be asked if this ad account will be used for your business or another business/client. Choose "My business."
  6. Click "Create."

Step 4: Grant Permissions and Add a Payment Method

You’ve technically created the ad account, but there are two final setup steps before you can actually launch a campaign: assigning access to yourself and adding a payment method.

Assigning People and Permissions

Just because you created the ad account doesn't mean your profile automatically has permission to use it. You need to explicitly assign access. This is a common hang-up for new users.

  1. After creating the ad account, a box should appear titled "Add people and set permissions."
  2. Select your own name from the list of people in your Business Manager.
  3. On the right side, toggle on the switch for "Full control" (Manage ad account). This grants you admin-level access.
  4. Click "Assign." If you have team members, you can repeat this process for them.

Adding a Payment Method

Facebook needs a way to charge you. You must have a valid payment method on file before campaigns go live.

  1. You might be prompted immediately after assigning permissions. Follow the on-screen instructions if so.
  2. Otherwise, go to "Payments" in the left-hand menu of Business Settings.
  3. Click the "Add Payment Method" button.
  4. Follow the prompts to add your credit/debit card, PayPal, or regional payment options.

With permissions and payment method configured, your ad account is ready! Access it via the main menu (the hamburger icon) in Business Manager and select "Ads Manager."

A Quick Tour of Your New Ads Manager

Welcome to your advertising dashboard! The layout might seem overwhelming at first, but it's structured logically. Here are the core components:

The layout flows from left to right across three main tabs:

  • Campaigns: The highest level, where you set your overall advertising objective (e.g., website traffic, leads, sales).
  • Ad Sets: Inside each campaign, define targeting, budget, schedule, and placements.
  • Ads: The actual creative assets—images, videos, copy, and links.

To start your first campaign, click the bright green "+ Create" button and follow the prompts through each level.
