How to Connect ManyChat to Facebook Ad

Cody Schneider••9 min read

Setting up a Facebook Ad that leads to a landing page is a classic marketing play, but you can create a much more direct and engaging experience by connecting your ads directly to a ManyChat bot. This simple integration allows you to start an automated, interactive conversation in Facebook Messenger the moment a user clicks your ad. We’ll show you exactly why this is so powerful and then walk you through the entire setup process, step-by-step.

Why Connect ManyChat to Your Facebook Ads?

Sending ad traffic to a chatbot instead of a static webpage might seem like a small change, but it fundamentally alters the user experience and can have a significant impact on your results. By starting a conversation immediately, you open up new possibilities for engagement, lead capture, and personalization.

Higher Engagement and Conversion Rates

Landing pages create friction. Users have to wait for a page to load, figure out its layout, find the form, and then decide if they want to fill it out. A Messenger conversation, on the other hand, is instant and happens in a familiar environment. When someone clicks your ad, they are immediately in a one-on-one chat. This immediacy holds their attention, reducing the likelihood of them bouncing. You can capture leads, offer discounts, or book appointments directly within the conversation, often leading to higher conversion rates than traditional form-based landing pages.

Immediate, Personalized Lead Nurturing

A chatbot doesn't just collect information, it can qualify leads in real-time. By asking a few simple questions, your ManyChat flow can segment an audience, understand their needs, and tailor the rest of the conversation to their specific interests. For example, it can ask about their budget, timeline, or pain points and then respond with the most relevant information or guide them to the right product. This feels like a personal consultation, not a generic form.

Reduce Cost Per Lead (CPL)

A simplified conversion process usually means lower costs. Because the path from ad click to lead capture is shorter and more engaging, you often see a significant reduction in your cost per lead. Facebook also tends to favor ad experiences that keep users on its platform, which can sometimes result in better ad delivery and lower costs.

Build a List of Messenger Subscribers

When a user interacts with your chatbot, they can become a Messenger subscriber (with proper consent). This gives you a new channel for communicating with them. You can send follow-up messages, broadcast updates, and re-engage them with future offers, all within the high-visibility environment of their Messenger inbox. It’s like email marketing but with drastically higher open and click-through rates.

Prerequisites: What You’ll Need to Get Started

Before diving into the setup, make sure you have everything you need in place. This will save you a lot of time and potential headaches later. Here’s a quick checklist:

  • A Business Facebook Page: Your ads will be run from your business page, and this is what your ManyChat bot will connect to.
  • A Facebook Ad Account: You'll need this to create and manage your campaigns. It’s highly recommended to have this set up within a Facebook Business Manager.
  • Admin-Level Access: You must have admin permissions for both your Facebook Page and your Ad Account to make the required changes.
  • A ManyChat Pro Account: While ManyChat has a free plan, the features required for connecting to Facebook Ads, like the JSON Growth Tool, are part of the Pro subscription.
  • A Pre-Built ManyChat Flow: You should have a welcome message or a full conversational flow built and ready to go in ManyChat. This is the conversation that will trigger when someone clicks your ad.

Step-by-Step: Connecting an Ad to Your ManyChat Bot

Follow these steps carefully to ensure your ad and chatbot are connected correctly. We'll start by preparing the bot in ManyChat and then move over to Facebook Ads Manager to build the campaign.

Step 1: Create a New Conversational Flow in ManyChat

Your first step is creating the conversation that will greet users after they click the ad. This flow sets the tone and guides the user toward your goal.

  1. Log in to your ManyChat account.
  2. Navigate to the Automation section in the left-hand menu and click the New Flow button.
  3. Give your flow a memorable name, like "FB Ad Welcome Flow - Summer Sale."
  4. Your first message is incredibly important. It needs to align with the ad creative and headline. For example, if your ad promises a 20% discount, the first message should confirm that promise: "Hey {{first_name}}! Thanks for tapping our ad. Ready to claim your exclusive 20% discount code?"
  5. Use buttons or quick replies to make it easy for the user to respond. A simple "Yes, I'm Ready!" or "Get My Code" button works perfectly.
  6. IMPORTANT: In this opening message, you must get the user's consent to send them messages in the future. Complying with Facebook's policies is not optional. You can add a subtle line like: "By tapping below, you'll get your code and agree to receive occasional updates from us."

Step 2: Get the JSON Code from ManyChat

To connect your ad to this specific flow, you need a special piece of code generated by a ManyChat Growth Tool. Don't worry, you don't need to write any code yourself - you just need to copy and paste it.

  1. In your ManyChat flow, click Add Trigger. It will be the "Starting Step" box.
  2. From the list of triggers, select Facebook Ads JSON.
  3. You can now edit the flow that the trigger starts. Click the Edit Flow button and tailor the automated messages for people who click your ad. We've done this in Step 1.
  4. Once you're happy with your messages, click the Publish button in the top right.
  5. Next, go back to the Facebook Ads JSON trigger you set up in your automation flow.
  6. Click the setup button. A window will appear with a big block of code inside. This strange-looking text is the JSON code.
  7. Click the Copy Code to Clipboard button. This is the code you'll need for your Facebook ad.

Step 3: Create Your Ad Campaign in Facebook Ads Manager

Now, let's head over to Facebook Ads Manager to create the campaign that will direct people to your new chatbot flow.

Campaign & Ad Set Level

  1. Open Facebook Ads Manager and click the green + Create button.
  2. For your Campaign Objective, choose one that supports messaging. The most common and direct is Engagement. However, Sales or Leads can also work, as long as you select "Messaging Apps" at the ad set level. Let's proceed with Engagement.
  3. At the Ad Set level, in the "Conversion" section, select On your ad and then choose Messaging apps from the dropdown menu for Engagement type.
  4. Make sure your Facebook page is selected under "Messaging apps." Uncheck any other apps like Instagram if you only want the conversation to happen on Facebook Messenger.
  5. Proceed to set your Budget & schedule, Audience, and Placements as you normally would for any ad campaign. Your targeting strategy is still crucial for getting in front of the right people.

Ad Level (Where the Connection Happens)

  1. Navigate to the "Ad" level of your campaign setup.
  2. Under Ad setup, choose your creative format (single image/video, carousel) and upload your media.
  3. Write your compelling Primary Text, Headline, and Description. Make sure your message clearly tells users what to expect when they click. For example, your headline could be "Chat with Us to Get Your Code."
  4. Make sure the Call to action is set to Send Message.
  5. This is the most critical step. Under the Message Template section, select Advanced setup and click the Edit button.
  6. A new window will open showing a text box filled with default JSON code. Delete all of that default code.
  7. Now, paste the JSON code you copied from ManyChat in Step 2 into this empty text box.
  8. Save your changes and preview your setup to ensure it’s working correctly, then hit the Publish button!

Once your ad is approved, any user who clicks the "Send Message" button will immediately be sent into the exact ManyChat flow you built.

Best Practices for Your Ad-to-Messenger Funnel

Setting up the technical connection is just the first part. To get the best results, you need to create a smooth and valuable user experience.

  • Create a Good First Impression: Your welcome message should be enthusiastic and hyper-relevant to the ad the person just saw. Confirm they're in the right place and immediately restate the value proposition (e.g., getting a discount, downloading a guide).
  • Guide the Conversation: Don't leave your users hanging with an open-ended "How can I help you?" prompt. Instead, use buttons and quick replies to guide them through the conversation. This reduces friction and keeps them engaged.
  • Use Tags for Segmentation: As users interact with your buttons, apply tags in ManyChat. Are they interested in women's shoes or men's shoes? Are they a beginner or an expert? This data invaluably helps deliver personalized follow-up content later.
  • Offer a Human Touch: Always include an easy escape hatch for users to connect with a live person. A button that says "Talk to a Human" can save a frustrating experience if the bot gets stuck or can't answer a specific question.
  • Test, Test, Test: Before publishing your campaign, use the "Preview in Messenger" feature in Facebook Ads Manager extensively. Go through the entire flow as if you were a customer to catch any glitches, dead ends, or typos.

Final Thoughts

Connecting your Facebook Ads to a ManyChat bot transforms a passive ad click into an active, engaging conversation. This strategy allows you to capture leads more effectively, provide instant personalization, and nurture potential customers in a way that just isn't possible with a standard landing page. Follow the steps outlined above to create a seamless link between your ads and your automated flows.
