How to Center Text in Tableau
Getting your text perfectly aligned in Tableau can feel like it should be simple, but it can sometimes turn into a frustrating scavenger hunt through various menus and panes. This guide will show you exactly how to center text in every common scenario you'll encounter. We’ll cover everything from labels within a chart and worksheet titles to headers and objects on a dashboard.
Why Does Centering Text in Tableau Matter?
Before diving into the "how," it’s worth a quick mention of the "why." Proper text alignment isn’t just about making things look good, it has a real impact on how your audience interprets your data visualization. Centered text often contributes to:
- Better Readability: Well-aligned text, especially in tables and KPIs, can guide the eye smoothly and make data easier to digest. Left-aligned numbers in a wide column can feel disconnected, while centered text creates a firm visual anchor.
- Professional Polish: Consistent and deliberate alignment gives your dashboards a clean, professional, and well-designed feel. It shows attention to detail, which builds trust in your work.
- Visual Balance: Centering headers and titles can create a more symmetrical and balanced layout, which is foundational to effective dashboard design. It helps define sections without needing heavy borders or lines.
In short, mastering text alignment is a small but powerful skill that elevates your work from a functional chart to a professional-grade report.
Method 1: Centering Text Inside a Worksheet View
This is blade number one for centering text in Tableau - the labels right within your charts and tables. In an ideal world, the Alignment buttons might live on the main toolbar, but in Tableau, they're tucked away in the Marks card. Following the steps below will set things in motion to properly view text this way.

For Text Tables (Crosstabs)
Text tables are one of the most common places you'll need to adjust alignment. By default, Tableau often right-aligns numbers and left-aligns text, but centering can often improve readability.
- Drag the dimension you want for your rows (e.g., 'Category') onto the Rows shelf.
- Drag the measure you want to display (e.g., 'Sales') onto the Text button within the Marks card. This will create a basic table.
- Still on the Marks card, click the button now labeled Text or Label. This opens up the editing options.
- You will see a formatting section for 'Alignment'. This gives you separate controls for horizontal and vertical alignment.
- For the Horizontal option, click the middle icon to center the text within its column.
- For the Vertical option, click the middle icon to center the text in the middle of the row. This is particularly noticeable when you have taller rows due to text wrapping or larger fonts.
This same principle applies when you use labels on other chart types, like adding value labels to a bar chart. Simply open the Label section on the Marks card and adjust the alignment there.
Method 2: Centering The Worksheet or Dashboard Title
A centered title provides a clear, strong heading for your worksheet. Unlike text within marks, a worksheet title has its own dedicated formatting menu.
How to Center a Worksheet Title
Most of the time, your users' focus after viewing the title is whatever you're displaying within the worksheet. Because that may differ from project to project, at least your centering needs can start here as you begin to work your way through your project to keep things consistent.
- By default, your worksheet title is usually visible at the top (e.g., "Sheet 1"). If it's not visible, go to the main menu and select Worksheet > Show Title.
- Double-click the title itself to open the "Edit Title" dialog box.
- In this editor, you can change the text, font, size, and color. You’ll also find the familiar alignment buttons: left, center, and right.
- Click the Center alignment button.
- Click OK.
Your worksheet title will now be perfectly centered across the top of your view. The same exact process applies to dashboard titles - just double-click the dashboard title to open the editor and find the alignment options.
Method 3: Centering Headers and Axis Labels
This is a common hurdle. You've centered the data in your table using Method 1, but the column headers are still stubbornly left-aligned. Headers (which are the titles for your dimensions and measures on the rows and columns shelves) and axes are formatted in a totally different place.
Let's go back to our text table example with 'Category' on Rows and 'SUM(Sales)' delivering the values. Your sales values might be centered, but the "Category" and "Sales" headers are not.
Steps to Center Field Labels and Headers
- Right-click on the header you want to format directly in the view. For example, right-click on the "Category" header on your table. This will select all associated headers within that field.
- In the context menu that appears, select Format....
- This will open the Format Pane on the left side of your screen. It can be tricky to navigate, so make sure you're on the right tab.
- At the top of the Format Pane, ensure you are on the Header tab (look for the icon that looks like a little table). A common mistake is being on the 'Pane' option, which formats the data cells instead.
- Under the 'Default' section, you will see a dropdown for 'Alignment'. Click it.
- Under the 'Text' sub-section, you'll find the Horizontal alignment options. Click the center icon.
- The headers for that field will now be centered. Repeat the process for any other headers you need to adjust.
This same logic applies to axis labels. If you want to format the alignment of labels on your X or Y axis, simply right-click one of those labels, choose 'Format', and navigate the Format Pane to adjust the Alignment settings for the axis.
Method 4: Centering Text on a Dashboard
Once you move your work to a dashboard, centering takes on a new meaning. There are two scenarios you will encounter a lot.
- Centering text within a Text Object.
- Making a worksheet appear centered on the dashboard.
Centering in a Text Object
Text Objects are handy for adding titles, descriptions, footnotes, or annotations to a dashboard. Aligning the text within them is straightforward.
- Drag a Text object from the 'Objects' section in the left pane onto your dashboard.
- An 'Edit Text' dialog box will appear.
- Here, you'll see a familiar rich-text editor with controls for font, size, color, and - you guessed it - alignment.
- Simply type your text and use the center alignment button before clicking OK.
Centering a Worksheet on the Dashboard
Sometimes, centering text on a dashboard isn't about text alignment at all - it’s about object positioning. You might have a worksheet with a single centered KPI, but when you drag it onto the dashboard, it’s stuck in the corner.
Here are a few tricks to fix this:
- Entire View: First, try changing the worksheet's fit. Click on the worksheet you've added to the dashboard, then click the small downward arrow in the top right corner to open its dropdown menu. Go to Fit > Entire View. This forces the worksheet to expand and fill the container it's in, which can often solve the centering problem for simple visuals.
- Use Blank Objects for Padding: For more precise control, you can use Blank objects as spacers. Let's say you have a horizontal container. You can drag a Blank object to its left, then your worksheet, and then another Blank object to its right. These blank objects act as padding, effectively pushing your worksheet to the center. While this is a manual trick, it’s very effective for achieving pixel-perfect layouts.
- Distribute Evenly in Containers: If you place several worksheets or objects into a horizontal or vertical container, you can center them relative to each other. Click the dropdown arrow for the container object (you may need to select the container first in the 'Item hierarchy' on the Layout pane) and choose Distribute Evenly. This command ensures that all items a parent object contains will have an equivalent height or width. This is especially useful for creating neatly aligned scorecards.

Common Troubleshooting Tips
"I centered my text, but it's not perfectly in the middle!" This thought might sound quite specific but it occurs a lot, so you aren't completely on your own in that feeling.
- Check your Pane vs. Header Formatting: The most common error is accidentally formatting the 'Pane' (the data area) instead of the 'Header' when you're trying to align column titles. Always double-check which tab you're on in the Format pane.
- Beware of the "Fit" Setting: As mentioned, the worksheet's fit (
Standard,Fit Width,Fit Height,Entire View) dramatically impacts how alignment appears on a dashboard. If something looks off, experimenting with these settings is often the quickest fix. - Fixed vs. Automatic Sizing: When something looks perfectly centered in Tableau Desktop but is off-kilter when published, it’s often a sizing issue. Setting your dashboard size to a Fixed size instead of 'Automatic' gives you more predictable control over alignment and spacing.
Final Thoughts
Centering text in Tableau is a simple task once you know where to look. By understanding the distinction between aligning labels in the Marks card, headers via the Format pane, and objects on a dashboard, you can achieve a clean, professional, and balanced design for any visualization you create.
While mastering the quirks of a specific tool like Tableau is valuable, it can also lead to spending hours on minor formatting tweaks instead of discovering insights. At Graphed we handle the busywork of building and formatting visualizations for you. You can connect all your data sources and simply ask in plain English for the dashboard you need — for example, "Create a dashboard showing our sales pipeline from Salesforce, broken down by sales rep and deal stage."
