What is a Facebook Ad Credit? A Simple Definition

A Facebook ad credit, also sometimes called an ad coupon, is a form of payment you can use to cover advertising costs on Meta's platforms, which include Facebook, Instagram, Messenger, and the Audience Network. It's essentially a voucher provided by Meta that reduces your final ad bill.

Instead of charging your primary payment method (like a credit card or PayPal account), Facebook will first deduct costs from your available ad credit balance. For advertisers, especially small businesses and startups, these credits can be a great way to test new campaigns, explore different creative assets, or scale a successful ad without dipping further into your own budget.

How Do Facebook Ad Credits Work?

Understanding the mechanics of ad credits is straightforward. Once a credit is added to your account, it sits in your payment settings as a ready-to-use balance. There’s typically no extra step needed to "activate" it once it has been claimed.

When you run an advertising campaign, Meta racks up costs based on impressions, clicks, conversions, or whatever objective you’ve set. At the end of the billing period (which can be monthly or once you hit a certain spending threshold), Meta calculates your total ad spend. It then automatically applies any available ad credit balance to that total before charging your primary payment method. For example, if you spent $150 on ads and had a $50 ad credit, Meta would use the credit to cover the first $50, and then charge your credit card for the remaining $100.

What Ad Credits Cover (and What They Don't)

For the most part, ad credits cover the cost of running advertisements. However, there are some important distinctions to keep in mind:

  • Typically Covered: The cost associated with any ad campaign created within a Meta Business Account. This includes ads for reach, traffic, engagement, conversions, app installs, and more across all of Meta's platforms.
  • Typically Not Covered: Ad credits generally cannot be used to pay for past ad spend that was incurred before the credit was issued. They also can't be used to cover other business expenses on Facebook, like the cost of setting up a Shops catalog, and they absolutely cannot be redeemed for cash or transferred to another account.

Finding and Claiming Your Ad Credits

If you have an ad credit, Meta will usually notify you via email or a notification within your Meta Business Suite. However, you can also check your balance manually. Tracking down your ad credits is easy if you know where to look.

Here are the steps to find and review your ad credit balance:

  1. Navigate to the Meta Ads Manager.
  2. Click on the hamburger menu icon (three horizontal lines) in the top left corner. This opens the "All tools" menu.
  3. Under the "Manage Business" section, select Billing.
  4. Once on the Billing page, click on Payment Settings in the left-hand menu.
  5. Near the top of the Payment Settings page, look for the Ad Credits section. Here you will see any active credits, their remaining balances, and — importantly — their expiration dates.

If you've received an ad credit offer via email or from a Meta partner, it often comes as a claim code. To add this to your account, you’ll follow the same steps outlined above and then on payment settings, press Add payment button. You will then see an option for adding an ‘Ad credit’ just there instead of your typical payment methods. Enter the code, and Meta will validate it.

Where Do Facebook Ad Credits Come From?

Ad credits aren't handed out randomly. Most of the time, they are offered by Meta for very specific reasons. There are four ways people commonly get an ad credit:

1. One-Time Promotional Offers for New Advertisers

This is one of the most common ways to get an ad credit. To encourage new businesses to try out the platform, Meta often runs promotions offering a small credit (e.g., $10–$50) after they launch their first campaign and spend a certain amount of their own money. It's much like promotions from food delivery service providers that offer a discount after an initial purchase.

2. Ad Account Disabled in Error

Another way to obtain ad credits is through Meta Business Support. Sometimes Meta's systems mistakenly flag a campaign, disabling an advertiser's account. If an error is determined, Meta's support team might offer a credit as a form of apology to affected advertisers. This credit compensates for the disruption and allows advertisers to resume their promotional activities.

3. Account Credits for Reaching Spending Milestones

If an advertising account achieves certain spending milestones, Meta may offer bonus credits. These milestone credits act as a goodwill gesture to incentivize businesses to continue their advertising efforts on the platform.

4. Credits in Partnership with Other SaaS Companies

Meta collaborates with several third-party companies to provide ad credits. For instance, startups might get free ad credits when partnering with services like Shopify. These collaborations offer businesses affordable ways to start advertising on Facebook, helping them launch their campaigns with reduced costs.

Final Thoughts

Facebook ad credits are a powerful tool for stretching your marketing budget. Understanding who they are intended for and how to use them effectively can help ensure compliance and maximize the benefits. Finding, claiming, and using these credits wisely can lead to more efficient investment in your campaigns, allowing you to focus better on your business's future success.

Once your campaigns are running, the next challenge is figuring out if that "free" spend is actually delivering results. Instead of getting tangled up in Ads Manager and exporting CSVs, we've found the simplest way to understand performance is to ask simple questions. With Graphed, we made it possible to connect your Facebook Ads account, then just ask, "Show me my campaign ROI from last week," or "Which ad creative has the lowest cost per purchase?"
