Prepare for the Transfer: Essential Prerequisites

Before you even click the first button, a successful transfer depends on having the right permissions and understanding a few key ground rules. Taking a moment to confirm these details will prevent frustrating dead ends and ensure a smooth move.

Check Your User Permissions

Google has strict requirements for this process to protect data ownership, and it all comes down to one role: Administrator.

You must have the Administrator role at the Account level for both:

  • The Source Account (the account the property is currently in).
  • The Destination Account (the account you want to move the property to).

Having Administrator rights at just the property level is not enough. To check your permissions, go to the Admin section of Google Analytics, select the account, and click on Account Access Management. You'll see a list of users and their assigned roles. If you don't have the necessary access, you'll need to ask an existing Account-level Administrator to upgrade your permissions.

Important Note: The 7-Day Waiting Period

If you've just been granted Administrator permissions on either account, you can't immediately perform a transfer. Google enforces a mandatory 7-day waiting period for newly added Admins before they are allowed to move or delete properties. This security measure is in place to prevent unauthorized transfers of assets. If you try to initiate a move within this window, the option will be unavailable.

What Transfers with Your Property (And What Doesn’t)

When you move a property, you’re moving almost everything associated with it. Here’s a quick overview:

  • What Moves: Your historical data, reporting data, audience lists, custom dimensions, events, conversions, Google Ads links, and most other connected service links (like Search Console) will all move with the property. Your setup and configurations remain intact.
  • What Doesn't Move: The biggest thing to remember is that property-level user access from the source account doesn't automatically carry over. Any users who only had access to that specific property (and not the whole account) in the original location will lose access once it's moved. Account-level settings like filters from the source account also won't follow the property to its new home.

Unlink BigQuery First

If your Google Analytics 4 property is currently linked to Google BigQuery for raw data exports, the transfer will be blocked. You must first go to the "Product Links" section in the Admin panel and unlink BigQuery before beginning the move. You can easily relink it once the property is settled in its new account.

A Step-By-Step Guide to Transferring Your GA4 Property

Once you’ve confirmed you have the correct permissions and handled any necessary unlinking, the transfer process itself is quite straightforward. Follow these steps carefully.

Step 1: Navigate to Your Admin Settings

Log in to Google Analytics and click on the Admin gear icon in the bottom-left corner of your screen. This will take you to the main settings area for your accounts, properties, and data streams.

Step 2: Select the Property You Want to Move

In the "Account" column, make sure you have selected the account that currently holds the property you wish to transfer. Then, in the middle "Property" column, find and select the specific GA4 property from the dropdown list. Once selected, click on Property Settings.

Step 3: Initiate the Property Move

At the top-right corner of the Property Settings screen, you'll see a blue button labeled Move Property. Click it to start the transfer wizard.

Step 4: Choose the Destination Account

A new screen will appear asking where you want to move the property. From the "Move to account" dropdown menu, select the destination account. Remember, this list will only display accounts where your Google user has Account-level Administrator permissions.

Step 5: Define User Permission Settings

This is arguably the most important step in the migration process, as it determines who will have access to the property in its new location. You have two options:

  • Replace existing property and account permissions with permissions from the destination account. This is the cleanest and most common option, especially when transferring property to a client or different company. It wipes all existing property-level user access and inherits access rules from the new destination account. Anyone with Administrator, Editor, or Viewer access on the destination account will get those same permissions on the property.
  • Keep existing property permissions and add users from the destination account. This option is better for internal restructuring where you want existing team members to retain their specific property-level access without interruption. It merges the existing access list with the access list from the destination account. Be careful, as this can create a messy web of permissions if you’re not tracking it closely.

Review your choice carefully based on why you're making the move. For most handoffs, the "Replace" option is the correct and simplest choice.

Step 6: Confirm and Start the Transfer

Finally, Google will show you a confirmation dialog box summarizing the changes. You will need to tick the checkboxes acknowledging that you understand the consequences, such as potential impacts on permissions and billing if linked to Google Ads. Once you’re ready, click the Start move button.

The transfer process begins immediately and typically only takes a few minutes to complete. During this time, the property will be temporarily inaccessible.

Post-Transfer Checklist: What to Do Next

After Google confirms the move is complete, don't assume you're finished. Take a few minutes to run through this checklist to ensure everything is working as expected and your team has the access they need.

1. Verify the Property in the New Account

Log out and log back into Google Analytics. Switch to the new destination account and confirm that the moved property is now visible and accessible. Try opening a few reports to ensure your historical data is intact.

2. Re-Establish User Access

This is critical. If you chose the "Replace" permissions option, you'll need to re-add any team members who need access to the property. Go to the new account's Account Access Management or the property's Property Access Management and grant the appropriate roles to your colleagues or clients.

3. Check Product Links

While most product links are preserved, it's wise to verify them. Go to Admin -> Product Links in the property column. Pay special attention to your Google Ads and Search Console links. Click into each one and ensure the connection is listed as active and healthy. An owner of the linked Ads account may need to approve the connection from their end.

4. Communicate with Your Team

Send a quick email or message to everyone involved, letting them know the transfer is complete. Inform them about any new procedures for accessing the report or if they need to request new permissions from the new account administrators.

5. Update Bookmarks and Internal Documentation

A simple but often overlooked step. If your team had bookmarked direct links to specific GA4 reports, those URLs will have changed. Advise everyone to update their bookmarks to avoid confusion.

Final Thoughts

Transferring a Google Analytics property between accounts is a manageable process that becomes simple when you follow the right steps. By verifying permissions beforehand, carefully choosing your user settings during the move, and running a quick post-transfer check, you can ensure a clean handoff while keeping all your valuable historical data secure.
