How to Track Instagram Analytics

Cody Schneider8 min read

Posting on Instagram without checking your analytics is like driving with your eyes closed - you might be moving, but you have no idea where you're going. Understanding your data is the single most important step to turning random posts into a predictable growth strategy. This guide breaks down exactly how to track your analytics, what metrics actually matter, and how to use them to grow your account.

Why Bother Tracking Instagram Analytics?

Diving into your numbers might feel like a chore, but it’s where all the good stuff happens. Tracking your analytics is the only way to get clear answers to the most important questions about your account:

  • Who is my audience? Analytics tell you where your followers live, their age, their gender, and when they’re most active online.
  • What content do they love? You can finally stop guessing. Data shows you exactly which photos, Reels, and Stories get the most engagement.
  • Is my strategy working? See if your efforts are resulting in real growth (more reach, engagement, and followers) over time.
  • How can I improve? Insights reveal your top-performing content, giving you a roadmap of what to create more of and what to leave behind.

Ultimately, a few minutes spent in your analytics can save you hours of creating content that nobody sees or engages with.

First Things First: Switch to a Professional Account

Before you can access any data, you need to tell Instagram you’re serious. Analytics features are only available for Business or Creator accounts. If you’re still using a Personal account, you won’t have access to the “Insights” tab. The switch is free and only takes a minute.

Here’s how to do it:

  1. Go to your profile page and tap the hamburger menu (☰) in the top-right corner.
  2. Tap Settings and privacy.
  3. Scroll down and tap Account type and tools.
  4. Tap Switch to professional account.
  5. Follow the prompts. You’ll be asked to choose a category that best describes what you do (e.g., Blogger, Musician, Local Business) and then select whether you are a "Creator" or a "Business".

That’s it! Your account is now upgraded, and your Professional Dashboard button will appear on your profile. Keep in mind that Instagram will only start collecting data from the day you switch, so you won't be able to see historical analytics from before you made the change.

A Guided Tour of Instagram Insights

Instagram’s built-in analytics tool is called Insights. It's incredibly powerful for a free tool and gives you a comprehensive look at your account’s performance. To find it, go to your profile and tap on your Professional Dashboard. From there, you’ll see a summary, but you should tap See all under "Account insights" to get the full view.

Your main Insights dashboard is organized into three key sections: Accounts Reached, Accounts Engaged, and Total Followers. Let’s break each one down.

Accounts Reached

This section tells you how many unique people saw your content. It’s the best measure of your overall brand awareness and visibility on the platform.

  • Reach vs. Impressions: These are easily confused. Reach is the number of unique accounts that saw your content. Impressions is the total number of times your content was seen. If one person sees your post three times, that counts as 1 for reach and 3 for impressions. A high impressions-to-reach ratio often means your followers are viewing your content multiple times.
  • Audience Demographics: Scroll down to find crucial information about the people you're reaching, including their Top Countries, Top Cities, Top Age Ranges, and Gender. This is essential for ensuring you're attracting the right audience.
  • Followers and non-followers: This simple pie chart is fantastic. It shows you what percentage of your reach is coming from existing followers versus people who don’t follow you. If a large portion of your reach comes from non-followers, it’s a sign that your content is doing a great job of appearing on the Explore page, Reels feed, or from hashtags.

Accounts Engaged

Reach is great, but engagement is what builds a community. This section shows you how many unique accounts interacted with your content during the selected time period.

  • Engagement actions: This includes Likes, Comments, Saves, and Shares. Each of these tells you something different about your content:

Total Followers

This dashboard gives you a big-picture view of your follower community and its growth over time. You’ll see a clean line chart showing your total follower count and a summary of how many people followed and unfollowed you each day.

  • Follower Growth: The main graph here helps you pinpoint which days you gained (or lost) the most followers. Try to line up those spikes with specific content you posted. Did a Reel go viral and bring in a ton of new fans? Did a controversial post cause a wave of unfollows?
  • Audience Demographics: Just like in the "Accounts Reached" section, you get a breakdown of your audience by location, age, and gender. Use this to refine your content persona.
  • Most Active Times: This is a goldmine. It shows you the days and hours your followers are most active on Instagram. Posting during these peak windows gives your content the best possible chance of being seen right away, which helps generate initial engagement and pleases the algorithm.

Analyzing Performance by Content Type

Every type of content on Instagram has its own unique set of metrics. Understanding what to look for will help you double down on the formats your audience loves most.

Feed Posts (Photos, Videos, and Carousels)

To see analytics on a specific post, simply open it from your profile and tap the View insights button below the image. Here, you'll find metrics like:

  • Reach: How many unique accounts saw the post.
  • Content Interactions: The total number of Likes, Comments, Saves, and Shares.
  • Profile Activity: This shows actions taken after seeing your post, including Profile Visits, Follows, and Website Taps. These are critical for measuring content that drives direct action.

Pro Tip: For carousel posts, pay close attention to the saves. Educational content, tips, and tutorials organized into a multi-slide carousel are often a magnet for saves.

Reels Insights

Reels are all about grabbing attention quickly and have a slightly different set of metrics. Access them the same way as a post: open the Reel and tap View insights.

  • Views (or Plays): This is the headline metric for Reels. It counts the number of times your Reel has been played, including replays.
  • Accounts Reached: This shows the number of unique accounts that saw your Reel at least once. This can be a more telling metric for viral potential than just Views.
  • Interactions: Likes, Comments, Saves, and Shares apply here as well. A Reel with high saves and shares has a much greater chance of being pushed to a wider audience.

Story Insights

Story analytics expire after 14 days, but they offer valuable real-time feedback. To view them, open a live story and swipe up, or go to your Professional Dashboard > Insights > Content You Shared > Stories.

  • Navigation metrics: These tell you how people moved through your Story slides.
  • Interactions: Involves replies and taps on stickers (like polls, quizzes, or sliders), which are fantastic for measuring active engagement with your audience.

Which Instagram Metrics Should You Actually Track?

With dozens of metrics available, it's easy to get lost. The best approach is to focus on a few key performance indicators (KPIs) that align directly with your business goals. Everything else is just noise.

If Your Goal is Brand Awareness:

  • Reach: Is your content getting in front of new people? Compare your reach week-over-week and month-over-month.
  • Follower Growth Rate: A simple follower count doesn't tell the whole story. Tracking your growth rate puts it in context. Formula: (New Followers / Starting Followers) * 100.
  • Impressions from Non-followers: Track how well you're leveraging features like Reels and hashtags to break out of your follower bubble.

If Your Goal is Engagement:

  • Engagement Rate: Instagram doesn't show this, but it’s the most important metric for engagement. It measures the percentage of your followers who interact with your content. A high rate shows you have a healthy, active community.
  • Formula:
  • Comments: Monitor the growth in the average number of comments per post. Are your calls-to-action working?
  • Saves & Shares: These are "super engagements." Track which content types generate the most of them, and then make more.

If Your Goal is Conversions (Sales or Leads):

  • Website Taps: How many people are clicking the link in your bio from your profile or a specific post?
  • Story Link Clicks: If you have the link sticker, this tells you which content is most effective at driving traffic directly from Stories.
  • Profile Visits: Before someone clicks your bio link, they usually visit your profile first. Posts that generate high profile visits are great for conversion-focused goals.
