How to Install Google Analytics on a Wix Website
You’ve poured your energy into creating a fantastic Wix website, but how do you know if your efforts are paying off? Knowing who is visiting, what they're looking at, and where they came from is the key to growing your online presence. This is exactly what Google Analytics helps you do, and this guide will walk you through, step-by-step, how to connect it to your Wix site.
First, What Is Google Analytics and Why Do You Need It?
Think of Google Analytics (GA) as a free, incredibly detailed visitor counter for your website. It’s a powerful tool from Google that anonymously tracks and reports website traffic, giving you a behind-the-scenes look at how people interact with your site. It moves you from guesswork to data-backed decisions.
Without it, you're flying blind. With it, you can answer critical questions like:
- Who are my visitors? See where they are located in the world, what language they speak, and whether they are on a desktop or mobile device.
- How did they find me? Did they come from a Google search, a link on social media, or by typing your URL directly?
- What do they do on my site? Find out which pages are the most popular, how long people stay on your site, and what content keeps them coming back.
- Are my marketing efforts working? If you run a marketing campaign, GA can show you how much traffic it's sending to your site.
For any Wix website owner - whether you’re running a blog, a portfolio, or an e-commerce store - this information is pure gold. It helps you understand your audience better, create more of the content they love, and optimize your site to achieve your goals.
Before You Start: Getting Your Google Analytics 4 Measurement ID
Before you can connect anything to Wix, you need something to connect with. In this case, that’s your unique Google Analytics "Measurement ID." If you already have a Google Analytics 4 property set up, feel free to skip to the next section. If not, here’s how to create one from scratch.
Step 1: Create a Google Analytics Account and Property
First, you’ll need to set up your account and a "property" that will represent your Wix website. This is much simpler than it sounds.
- Visit the Google Analytics website and sign in with your existing Google account. If you don't have one, you'll need to create one first.
- Click Start measuring.
- Account Creation: Give your account a name. This is just for organization - you can name it after your business or yourself. Click Next.
- Property Creation: Now, for the important part. Give your property a name (e.g., "My Wix Website"), then select your reporting time zone and currency. Click Next.
- Business Details: Provide some basic information about your industry and business size. This helps GA customize your experience. Select how you intend to use Google Analytics (e.g., "drive sales," "measure user engagement"), accept the terms of service, and click Create.
Step 2: Set Up Your Web Data Stream
After creating your property, Google Analytics will ask you to set up a "data stream." This is simply the source of data you want to track. Since you're tracking a website, you’ll choose "Web."
- On the "Start collecting data" screen, choose the Web platform.
- In the "Set up your web stream" fields, enter your website’s URL (e.g.,
www.mycoolsite.com) and give the stream a name (e.g., "Wix Site Stream"). - Ensure "Enhanced measurement" is turned on. It’s on by default and automatically captures important events like page views, scrolls, and outbound clicks without any extra work.
- Click Create stream.
On the next screen, you’ll see the Web stream details. Look in the top-right corner.
You are looking for your Measurement ID. It starts with "G-" followed by a series of numbers and letters. It will look like this: G-XXXXXXXXXX.
This ID is the magic key. Copy it to your clipboard, and now you’re ready for the Wix part.
Connecting Google Analytics to Your Wix Site
Now that you have your Measurement ID, the hard part is over. Wix makes connecting Google Analytics incredibly easy with a built-in integration. No code, no complicated setup.
Important Note: To use this feature, you must have a Wix Premium Plan and a connected custom domain name (e.g., www.yourwebsite.com). It isn't available on free Wix plans.
Here’s how to get it done:
- Log in to Your Wix Account. Head over to Wix and sign in. From your list of sites, select the one you want to manage to open its main Dashboard.
- Navigate to Marketing Integrations. In the menu on the left side of your screen, look for the Marketing & SEO category. Hover over it and then click on Marketing Integrations.
- Find and Connect Google Analytics. You'll see a page with tiles for various popular marketing tools. The Google Analytics tile is usually one of the first options. Find it and click the Connect button.
- Add Your Measurement ID. A new screen or pop-up window will appear. Click the Add Google Analytics button in the top right. Simply paste the Measurement ID (the G-XXXXXXXXXX code) that you copied earlier into the provided field. Make sure you don't have any extra spaces before or after the code.
- Save Your Changes. Wix gives you an option for IP Anonymization, which helps you comply with privacy laws like GDPR by preventing Google from storing the full IP address of your visitors. It’s a good practice to leave this enabled. Click Save.
That’s it! Your Wix site is now connected to Google Analytics.
Confirming the Connection: Is Your Data Flowing?
Once connected, you’ll want to make sure everything is working correctly. It’s important to know that you won't see comprehensive reports right away - it can take Google Analytics 24 to 48 hours to fully process and display all your historical data. However, you can check for a live signal almost immediately.
Using the Realtime Report
The best way to verify the connection is with the Realtime report in Google Analytics. This report shows you activity on your site as it happens.
- Go back to your Google Analytics account.
- In the left-hand navigation menu, click on Reports > Realtime.
- Now, open your Wix website in a new browser tab or on your smartphone. Click around to a few different pages.
- Switch back to the Realtime report in Google Analytics. You should see the “Users in Last 30 Minutes” card show at least 1 user. You may also see a map light up with your current location.
If you see yourself as a live visitor, congratulations! The tracking code is working perfectly.
Troubleshooting Common Issues
Sometimes things don't go exactly as planned. Here are a few common issues and how to solve them.
"Where is the Marketing Integrations option? I can't find it."
This is almost always because the site is on a free Wix plan or doesn't have a custom domain connected. Google Analytics integration is a premium feature. You’ll need to upgrade your Wix plan and connect a domain you own to access it.
"I connected my ID, but I don't see any data in Google Analytics."
First, be patient. As mentioned, it can take up to 48 hours for data to start populating your reports. But if you've waited and still see nothing (and the Realtime report isn't showing any activity), try these steps:
- Double-check your Measurement ID for typos. Did you copy and paste the entire thing, including the "G-"?
- Clear your browser's cache or try visiting your site from an incognito window to verify the Realtime report.
- Temporarily disable any ad blockers you might be using on your browser, as they can sometimes interfere with analytics scripts.
"Wix asks for a Measurement ID, but I have an old Tracking ID (UA-XXXXXXX)."
Wix's new integration is designed for Google Analytics 4, which uses Measurement IDs (G-XXXXXXX). Universal Analytics (UA), which used the UA- codes, was sunset by Google in July 2023. If you only have a UA- code, you'll need to create a new GA4 property in your Google Analytics account to get the correct G- code. It's best to use the current, officially supported version anyway!
Final Thoughts
Connecting your Wix site to Google Analytics is one of the most valuable five-minute tasks you can do for your business. With this simple integration, you’ve unlocked a treasure trove of data that will help you understand your audience, measure your performance, and make smarter decisions to grow your website effectively.
Now that your data is flowing in, making sense of it becomes the next challenge. While Google Analytics is powerful, its interface can be overwhelming for many. We built Graphed to be the easiest way to get clear answers from services like Google Analytics and other data sources. You just connect your data and ask questions in plain English - like "what were my top 10 most popular landing pages last month?" - to get dashboards and visualizations built for you in seconds. It allows you to skip the steep learning curve and move straight to getting the insights you need.
