How to Find Google Analytics Property ID

Cody Schneider6 min read

Trying to connect a new plugin or integration to your Google Analytics almost always leads to the same request: "Please enter your Google Analytics Property ID." This short article will show you exactly where to find that ID, whether you're using the new Google Analytics 4 or the older Universal Analytics (UA). We'll cover both scenarios with simple, step-by-step instructions.

First, What Is a Google Analytics Property ID?

Think of the Google Analytics Property ID as the specific mailing address for your website or app's data. When a user visits your site, the Google Analytics tracking code fires off a packet of information (like what page they're on, their device type, etc.). The Property ID tells that data packet exactly which Google Analytics account and property it belongs to, so it doesn't get mixed up with data from another website.

It's your unique identifier within the Google Analytics ecosystem. Without it, none of your analytics tools or plugins can communicate with the right data set. But here's where it can get a little confusing.

The Two Types of IDs: "G-" vs. "UA-"

Depending on when you set up your Google Analytics, you will have one of two types of IDs. It's important to know which one you're looking for.

  • GA4 Measurement ID (starts with "G-"): This is the current and modern version. All new Google Analytics properties created since late 2020 use this format. Instead of a "Property ID," Google now calls this a "Measurement ID." It looks something like this: G-XYZ123ABC.
  • Universal Analytics Tracking ID (starts with "UA-"): This is the classic, older version that many people are used to. While Google has officially sunset Universal Analytics, many websites are still migrating or have older integrations that require this format. It looks like this: UA-12345678-1.

Now, let's find yours.

How to Find Your GA4 Property ID (the "G-" ID)

If you've set up Google Analytics recently, you're using Google Analytics 4. Here’s the "new" way to find what you're looking for, which is now called the Measurement ID.

  1. Log in to Google Analytics. Go to the Google Analytics homepage and sign in to your account.
  2. Navigate to the Admin Panel. Look for the gear icon labeled "Admin" in the bottom-left corner of your screen and click it.
  3. Select the Correct Account and Property. The Admin page is divided into two columns: Account and Property. If you manage multiple websites, use the drop-down menus at the top of these columns to ensure you have selected the correct website you need the ID for.
  4. Go to "Data Streams." Under the Property column (the one on the right), find and click on "Data Streams." A data stream is simply a source of data flowing into your Analytics property, like your website or a mobile app.
  5. Click On Your Website's Stream. You should see a list of one or more data streams. Most businesses will only have one listed here for their website. Click on it to open its details.
  6. Find Your Measurement ID. In the top right corner of the Web stream details page, you will see your Measurement ID. This is the "G-" code you are looking for. You can click the copy icon next to it to easily paste it where you need it.

That's it! That "G-" Measurement ID is the GA4 version of the Property ID. It’s what you'll use for nearly all modern integrations, themes, and plugins.

How to Find Your Universal Analytics Property ID (the "UA-" ID)

Even though Universal Analytics properties no longer process new data, you might still need to find your old "UA-" Tracking ID for reference or for plugins that haven't updated to a GA4 integration yet. The process is slightly different.

  1. Log in and Go to Admin. Just like before, log in to your Google Analytics account and click the "Admin" gear icon in the bottom left.
  2. Select your Universal Analytics Property. At the top of the Property column, use the drop-down selector to choose your Universal Analytics property. GA properties with "UA-" IDs are now clearly marked in the list to distinguish them from GA4 properties.
  3. Click on "Property Settings." In the Property column, find and click on "Property Settings." This is the key difference from the GA4 process.
  4. Your Tracking ID is at the Top. Right on the "Property Settings" page, at the very top, you'll see your Tracking ID. It will begin with "UA-" followed by a series of numbers.

If you're still on a Universal Analytics property, it's highly recommended to begin your migration to GA4 to ensure you're capturing data with the modern standard.

Common Problems and Quick Solutions

Sometimes things don't go as planned. Here are a few common issues and how to solve them.

"A plugin is asking for my UA- ID, but I only have a G- ID."

This is a frequent problem. It means the specific plugin, theme, or app you're trying to use hasn't been updated to work with Google Analytics 4. Your best bet is to check for an update for that plugin. If there isn't one, you may need to contact the developer for support or find an alternative tool that is GA4-compatible.

"I can't see the property I'm looking for."

If you have access to multiple Google Analytics accounts, make sure you've selected the correct Account in the top-left of the admin panel before trying to select the Property. If you still don't see it, you may need to ask for permissions to be granted to your Google account from the property's admin.

"Is my Measurement ID the same as my Property ID?"

In essence, yes. For Google Analytics 4 properties, the "Measurement ID" (G-XXXX) serves the same function as the "Tracking ID" (UA-XXXX) did for Universal Analytics properties. It's just Google's new name for the unique identifier that specifies where to send the data.

Final Thoughts

Finding your Google Analytics Property ID — whether it's the newer "G-" Measurement ID for GA4 or a legacy "UA-" Tracking ID — is simple once you know where to navigate within the Admin panel. Knowing the difference between the G- style and UA- style can also save you a lot of headaches when troubleshooting integrations.

Checking your performance in Google Analytics, however, is often just one piece of the reporting puzzle. We built Graphed to solve the frustrating, time-consuming process of manually pulling reports from Google Analytics, your ad platforms, your CRM, and your e-commerce store. Instead of bouncing between platforms, our tool lets you connect all your data sources in seconds and use natural language to build real-time dashboards instantly. Simply ask, "show me my Shopify sales driven by Google Organic traffic this month," and watch the answer appear in dashboards without opening a single spreadsheet.
