How to Edit Welcome Message in Facebook Ad
Trying to change the welcome message for your Facebook Messenger ad and can’t find the right setting? You're not alone. The Facebook Ads Manager is a powerful but often confusing platform, and simple tasks like this can feel like a scavenger hunt. This guide will walk you through the exact steps to find and edit your ad’s welcome message, whether you're creating a new campaign or updating an existing one.
Why Your Welcome Message Is So Important
Before we jump into the "how," let's quickly cover the "why." Your Welcome Message isn't just a placeholder, it's a critical part of your ad's performance. It is the very first, direct interaction a potential customer has with your business after clicking your ad. A good welcome message accomplishes several things:
- Makes a Great First Impression: It confirms to the user that they've landed in the right place and sets a friendly, professional tone.
- Sets a Clear Expectation: It can instantly tell users what to do next, whether it’s asking a question, booking an appointment, or browsing products.
- Increases Conversions: By guiding the user with a clear call to action, like a quick reply button, you remove friction and make it easier for them to take the next step.
- Pre-Qualifies Leads: You can use a short introductory question to immediately segment your audience or understand their intent.
Failing to customize this message leaves you with Facebook's generic text, which is a missed opportunity to engage a warm lead and start a meaningful conversation.
The Key: It’s All in the "Message Template"
The main reason people can't find this setting is that it's not in the main ad setup area with the creative and copy. Instead, it’s tucked away in a section at the Ad level called the Message Template. Once you know where to look, the process becomes much simpler.
Let's walk through how to find it for both new and existing ads.

How to Edit the Welcome Message for a New Ad Campaign
When you're building a new ad from scratch, you'll be prompted to create or choose your message template. Follow these steps to set it up perfectly.
1. Set Up Your Campaign and Ad Set
First, make sure you're using a campaign objective that supports Messenger as a destination.
- In Ads Manager, click + Create.
- Choose an objective like Engagement, Leads, or Sales. (Engagement campaigns with "Messaging apps" as the conversion location are most common for this).
- At the Ad Set level, under the "Conversion" or "Destination" section, select Messaging apps as the destination.
- Ensure that Messenger is selected as the specific app.
- Complete the rest of your ad set options like budget, schedule, and audience targeting.
2. Navigate to the Ad Level and Find the Template
Now, go to the final Ad level, where you set up your creative.
- Upload your ad image or video and write your primary text and headline as you normally would.
- Scroll down past the "Call to Action" button settings. You will see a section called Message Template.
This is where the magic happens. You’ll see an option to "Create new" or "Use existing." Select Create new and click the Edit button.
3. Customize Your Message Template
A new window will pop up where you can build your automated welcome sequence. This screen has a few key components:
Greeting
This is your primary welcome text. It’s the very first message people see when the chat window opens. It should be friendly, concise, and aligned with your ad message.
- Greeting text: Here, you can personalize the message. Click on "+ Add Personalization" to dynamically insert the user's first name, last name, or full name. This small touch dramatically improves engagement. A great opener is something like, "Hi [First Name]! Thanks for reaching out. How can we help you today?"
Customer Actions
This is where you guide the user's next step. You can choose from a few options to prompt a response.
- Frequently Asked Questions: You can set up predefined questions that users can click on. When they do, you can provide an automated answer or have it trigger a notification for you to reply manually.
- Quick Replies: These are simple, clickable text buttons that appear at the bottom of the chat. They are great for simple choices like "I'm interested," "Tell me more," or "What are your hours?"
- Buttons: These look more like traditional call-to-action buttons. You can use them to open a website URL (like a product page) or initiate a phone call.
A best practice is to offer 2-3 clear Quick Replies or Buttons that align with what a customer would most likely want to do after seeing your ad. For a local restaurant, this could be "View Menu" (Button linking to URL) and "Book a Table" (Button to a booking page).
As you build, you can see a live preview on the right side of the screen. Once you’re happy with it, click Save and Finish. You can even name your template so you can reuse it in future campaigns.
How to Edit the Welcome Message on an Existing Ad
What if your ad is already running and you need to make a change? The process is similar, but there’s a crucial catch you need to be aware of.
Step 1: Navigate to the Ad and Click "Edit"
Go into your Ads Manager dashboard and find the campaign, ad set, and specific ad that you want to change. Hover over the ad name and click the Edit link that appears.
Step 2: Find and Edit the Message Template
Just like with a new ad, scroll down to the Message Template section. You’ll see the name of the template you’re currently using. Click the Edit button. The same template customization window will pop up, allowing you to change the greeting text, buttons, or quick replies.

⚠️ Important Warning: Editing a Live Ad Resets Engagement
Here's the catch: once an ad is live and has been approved, almost any significant edit to the ad (including the message template) will cause it to be resubmitted for review and will RESET its social engagement. This means you will lose all the likes, comments, and shares that have accumulated on your ad post.
If social proof is important for your ad's performance, it is highly recommended that you do not edit the live ad directly.
Instead, follow this best practice:
- Select the ad you want to change within Ads Manager.
- Click the Duplicate button.
- In the duplicated (new) version of the ad, find the Message Template section and make your edits.
- Publish the new, duplicated ad.
- Turn off the original ad once the new one is approved and running.
This method preserves your original ad with its engagement history and allows you to launch the updated version without losing that valuable social proof.
Troubleshooting Common Issues
Still can't find the setting? Here are a few things to check:
- Are you at the right level? The Message Template setting only exists at the Ad level, not the Campaign or Ad Set level.
- Is your Campaign Objective correct? You must have Messaging apps selected as your conversion destination in the Ad Set. If you chose a Traffic campaign sending clicks to your website, this option won't appear.
- Is it a "Sponsored Message?" Sponsored Message placements have a different setup process, as they are sent to people who have already messaged your page. The welcome message is for initiating new conversations from ads in the feed or Stories.
Final Thoughts
Fixing your Facebook ad's welcome message is straightforward once you know it lives inside the "Message Template" at the ad level. Use it to create a personalized, helpful first touchpoint to guide users, set expectations, and ultimately get more value from your ad campaigns.
Optimizing your ad is just step one, the next step is knowing if it's actually working to drive sales or qualified leads.
